We had the good fortune of connecting with Zen Tuan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Zen, as a parent, what have you done for you children that you feel has had the most significant impact?
Exposing my 3-year-old daughter to acupuncture & healthy living!! It is so important to teach our children by example. I try my best to include my daughter in my all of my active and holistic life practices. Every morning she wakes up and helps me create a delicious (and healthy) green smoothie. She practices deep breathing and qi gong movements, we exercise & dance, and she will even ask for acupuncture whenever she is not feeling well. I am so excited to be part of her healthy and active lifestyle!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Growing up with immigrant entrepreneur parents, I suppose starting a business is in my blood. I’ve actually had no experience building a business prior to founding Healing With Zen but was confident that if I grew my practice on a foundation of service and quality of care for my patients, we would always enjoy success. I opened Healing with Zen immediately after obtaining my Master’s degree in Chinese Medicine from Emperor’s College in Santa Monica, CA. I have a clear vision for an ideal Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medical clinic, which I am excited to continue to grow and expand at my Pasadena, CA location, and beyond in the years to come. Healing with Zen is focused on education, growth of knowledge, a collaboration between our healers within the practice for optimal treatment, and a desire to provide safe and effective naturopathic holistic healing options to the community. We pride ourselves in providing the most effective acupuncture treatments possible using Dr Tan’s Balance Method and other holistic modalities such as Chinese herbs, whole food supplements, and lifestyle and movement practices.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Healing with Zen is located in Pasadena, California, and Old Town Pasadena is a great outdoor place to shop and eat. Pasadena is located at the foothill of the San Gabriel mountains, which is home to numerous beautiful hiking trails. The San Gabriel Valley is known for delicious Asian cuisine, with everything from Dim Sum to Peking Duck, from elegant traditional 9-course banquet meals to convenient and late-night Hong Kong cafes and boba tea shops. To get your art and nature fix, head to the Huntington Library for a gorgeous day full of priceless art, perfectly manicured gardens, and amazing botany. Going on a leisurely stroll around Descanso Gardens in La Cañada and the Arboretum in Arcadia is always therapeutic as well. And for a night out, I love going to the Langham hotel for a date night at the steakhouse, or drinks in the TAP room with some live music. There is absolutely no shortage of things to do in sunny Southern California!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The late Dr. Richard Teh-Fuh Tan created the Balance Method acupuncture, which is a highly targeted and specialized form of acupuncture that yields immediate results using distal points. This is the method I practice at Healing with Zen. Dr. Tan organized thousands of years’ worth of acupuncture and Chinese Medicine knowledge into a very mathematical and well-thought-out method that yields incredible results. It is truly inspirational and rewarding to practice his Balance Method because not only am I embodying an artform, but my patients always feel a tremendous difference after every session. Since Dr. Tan’s passing, his disciple Dr. Eileen Han has continued his legacy with the creation of The Academy of Acupuncture which continues to spread Dr. Tan’s Balance Method teachings throughout the world. I am incredibly grateful to have Dr. Han, L.Ac. and faculty member of The Academy of Acupuncture, Anna Dolopo, L.Ac. guide me on my journey of continued knowledge of acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine. These are truly amazing women who inspire me every day to be a better practitioner and business-woman.
