We had the good fortune of connecting with Zoe Brush and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Zoe, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
I love this quote that I heard in the most recent Cinderella movie, “Have courage and be kind.” Although it’s simple I have been impacted by it because I believe both things are equally valuable. As an artist, I have needed to be courageous over and over again. It takes courage to write a new song, to share it with the world. It takes courage to perform in Hollywood in front of others even if it’s ten other people. It takes courage to pursue a difficult career, one that is always fluctuating and hangs in the balance of my own creativity and self discipline. But in order to do any of those things it’s important to approach people with kindness. Kindness can go a long way and it is the key to creating and maintaining relationships in all areas of my life. It’s also important to be kind to myself. Often I am too hard on myself and have learned that when I start to feel the pressure or the frustration I need to treat myself with kindness.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The thing that excites me the most every morning when I wake up is wondering if today I will write the best song I’ve ever written. And that can mean something different every day. The most important thing to me is that I write something that speaks to me because I believe if it speaks to me maybe it will speak to someone else too. It’s a challenge and an excitement at the same time. The most important lesson I’m learning is that I want to write songs that are true to who I am and what I’m feeling. I was inspired recently by a podcast that was talking about vulnerability and how the literal translation means “wound.” My desire is to write music that is vulnerable… being able to witness my own wounds and witness the wounds of others. I hope to continue writing music that represents vulnerability and authenticity.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There is so much to do in Los Angeles! Since I am relatively new to the city (almost four years) I would say I still have a lot of places I would like to explore myself but we would definitely make a trip or two to the beaches nearby (Zuma beach is one of the nicest in my opinion), and visit Aroma Cafe in Studio City for some brunch. I would take them to The Standard Hotel rooftop bar in Downtown in the evening and we would enjoy a cocktail with a beautiful view of the city. I might also take them for a hike at Eaton Canyon or Hermit Falls the next day. We would most likely visit the more touristy areas of Los Angeles as well like Hollywood Boulevard and the Observatory in Griffith Park. Being from Colorado I love to explore the mountains nearby and would plan to spend a day hiking around Big Bear Lake or Lake Arrowhead. Both are beautiful areas that are a little less crowded than the city. I would also take my friend to visit the Huntington Gardens, a beautiful library and expansive garden in Pasadena. To end the trip we would eat at The Bowery Bungalow near East Hollywood… It’s a hole in the wall restaurant with to-die-for Mediterranean food. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate this Shoutout to my little sister, Hope. She is my best friend, my producer, and my business partner. Over the course of the past couple of years we started working together on music and she produced my first EP that was released in 2019 along with every other release since. She is the best partner I could ask for because we know each other better than anyone else and we compliment each other in the best way. Hope is a talented producer who is hard working and inspiring to me. We jokingly like to hold “business meetings” while doing random activities such as getting pedicures together, going on bike rides, or walking at the park. I am so grateful for her because she is always honest with me and encourages me to grow in my artistry. I wouldn’t be where I am today without her love and support.
