We had the good fortune of connecting with Mel McFail and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mel, alright, let’s jump in with a deep one – what’s you’re definition for success?
Success to me is accomplishing something that makes you happy no matter what. Not giving up when it gets hard. Not giving into self doubt or the influence of others. Not giving into fear; success is accomplishing a goal that gives you purpose. It could be doing 50 push ups everyday or starting a business. It’s a mindset and once you’ve set your mind to accomplish something, that’s all you really need.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Being a small business in LA you kind of have to think out of the box to get noticed. There’s just so much competition and you have to constantly reinvent yourself. As the creative of a brand and an owner, this basically means I’m terrified and vulnerable 24/7. It’s very difficult, as a female especially, to get recognition. Chris and I have a super strong foundation as business partners and friends. It’s so refreshing to be on the same page with someone who gets just as excited as I do. We’re very open with our communication and come to agreements very easily. This is probably the most important lesson I’ve learned along the way. No opportunity is worth your mental and emotional stability. It’s so important to be honest and trust whomever you go into business with.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First things first, snacks. I think Chris and I can both agree a trip to El Compadre is a must. Order the salsa verde and a flaming margarita. If you’re feelin a little fancy, head over to Nobu for the wagyu tacos and yellowtail. For a fun post dinner drink the Sunset Marquee is my absolute favorite for an upscale rock n roll social setting or of course, the Rainbow Bar and Grill for a more casual vibe with tons of Sunset Strip history. I don’t drink anymore so my big treat is coffee! The draft latte over at La Colombe is frothy and refreshing! While you’re over in the west side make a stop at Insomnia cookies for cookies served warm!! I guess that was all about snacks and trust me I could go on about the amazing food I love in LA!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d love to give a shout out to my very good friend Nita Strauss. Not only is she a talented musician, but she’s an incredible role model and loyal and supportive friend. I can’t thank her enough for the opportunities she’s given me and the strength she’s provided as a female in the industry.
