We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicholas James and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nicholas, how do you think about risk?
I think calculated risk taking is important in growing your career, and making the most out of life. The times I’ve made big moves outside of my comfort zone, were some of my biggest payoffs. I came out to Los Angeles with my camera, a car full of clothes, and a handful of dreams, 4 years later I have a successful photography business, all because I was willing to take a risk. If you have a burning urge or desire to grow, change, or become something new, there is always going to be some form of risk involved. It’s the exciting part of change, and I feel we should lean into it, instead of backing away.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a Los Angeles based Photographer and Videographer, who specializes in Nature, Landscape and Travel work. Be it landscape views from across the globe, or simply the unseen parts of nature and beauty that surround us on a daily basis, the goal with my art is to amplify the unnoticed, and to bring light to what many may never see with their own eyes. It has not been a quick or easy journey for me, but nothing worthwhile ever is. Artist life is not a smooth road, we choose it because it’s who we are inside, and nothing else will fill that void properly. It’s a wild ride of self-love and appreciation, that has helped me grow as a person and business owner. Photography has opened up a world of opportunity and adventure. I’ve been able to travel the world, see incredible landscapes, meet interesting new people and experience many lifelong memories. I’m excited for what’s next on my journey and proud of what I’ve accomplished so far.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I tend to gravitate to the quieter, more peaceful parts of LA; Some of my favorite spots include Malibu Canyon, Eaton Falls and Mount Wilson (including the amazing drive through Angeles Forest). There are some fantastic galleries as well like the Annenberg Space for Photography and The Broad downtown. Music and concerts at The Greek Theater are also always a treat! Food wise all you need to know is Gracies Pizza on Melrose. The best pizza in LA by a long shot!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout goes to my amazing girlfriend, Jasmine. She is a wonderful partner and has been a key figure in the growth and success of my photography. From driving me around through countless National Parks, helping me on shoots, or just being the person to go to for encouragement. As a creative, having emotional and moral support is imperative. There are many ups and downs along the road and knowing you have someone to rely on is extremely comforting and important. I feel very blessed to have Jasmine by my side!
