Perspectives on work life balance

The Coronavirus has given many us an opportunity to pause and think about life, our purpose, and even the right work life balance. What’s your perspective and has it changed over time?

I believe your greatest strength is also your greatest weakness, a double edged sword if you will. I strive to be involved in the creative process of telling stories everyday, whether I’m shooting, writing, working with actors or just looking for the next story to tell. I have very little separation between my work, romantic and day to day life. It’s all just a big swirl and that can be frustrating at times, but the journey of telling stories has deepened my human experience and pushed me to grow in many ways. Read more>>

I’ve always been one to work hard. For decades working hard meant putting in the time and effort to produce results. It’s the success formula that I modeled based on what my parents did and the people around me did. That’s not to formula for success. That’s the formula for burnout and disconnection. By 40, I was a corporate executive making the coveted 6-figure income with the all the right things– and MBA, an executive title, the money, etc. But I was stressed out. I used to be all about work. From the moment I woke up — after a morning yoga class — I’d be at my computer until well after dinner. When you’re a freelancer and work for yourself, you’ve got to have a strong work ethic and hustle. However, since having twins, I’ve found that my work life balance has changed dramatically. (Obviously.) It’s always been important to me to create a balance between the two. Which is why I would carve out time every day to sit down for a meal with my husband, get on my yoga mat, watch an episode of a show, etc. And this is something that I still do — I just have to be strategic about it.
