The Coronavirus has given many us an opportunity to pause and think about life, our purpose, and even the right work life balance. What’s your perspective and has it changed over time?

Katie Wilson | Artist

Maintaining a proper work-life balance has been something I have prioritized since I began accepting commissions for Artkitectures. Between work, my art, and personal life, it becomes easy to get overwhelmed and to over commit. When I take on a new project, I make sure that my calendar still has a little time for the things that are important to me and that bring me the most joy. It often means I don’t get to accept as many projects as I’d like and some things may have a longer lead time, but if I plan on there being any longevity to Artkitectures, I know that I personally need to avoid hustle culture. Joshua Liberitine | Director of photography

I think its not necessarily about finding a balance, its almost more about having a good amount of contrast. I try my best to have designated ‘work’ hours but where I currently am in my career I can only control that so much. I might get a call at 4 in the morning to find a house, cars, models, and crew for later that day. Read more>>

Owen Hamlin | Musical Artist

When I was younger the word WORK had a bad connotation to me. WORK meant homework or doing something that I didn’t want to do for my parents. As I’ve gotten older the word WORK has adopted a new meaning. For me WORK is all about things I can do in or supporting the music I make. Since I love music and have a desire to do it on a bigger and bigger level, WORK is fulfilling, necessary, and enjoyable. Read more>>

Nathania Pasila | Music Composer and Producer

As a composer and producer, my work life balance changes depending on how many projects I am working. There are times where I have so many projects that I don’t have time to hang out with my friends. However, I try to make a priority list so that way I can do my work efficiently while not burning myself out. Then on the days I don’t have that many projects, I can take more time with my work and enjoy my life a bit more. I’m still trying to figure out if it’s the right work life balance for me, but for now, having a flexible work life balance is working for me. Read more>>

Lauren Jack O’ryan McKinney | Lauren: Ceramicist | Gardener | Professional Gift Giver | Oryan: Talker. Speed Reader. Professional Gift Giver

We are both big believers in work life balance, because life is too exciting to spend all of your time on work. O’ryan and I both love what we do, but it doesn’t mean that there aren’t other projects & interests we would also love to have time to explore. Lauren is an artist and usually has a few projects going in the background. O’Ryan is very involved in her son’s school. We both make space for each other to have outside lives, so that the working relationship is one that is long lasting and doesn’t lead to burn out. We also find that it feeds into what we do at Hey.  Read more>>

Matt Hausmann | Screenwriter/Director

Work and life balance have drastically changed for me over time, especially over the past four years with the birth of my oldest daughter. I’m married with a two and a four-year-old. It’s important to split your time between family and work. They say you must write every day to be successful. That’s tough to do when you have two kids who want to go in the pool, play, and go out to eat with you. Life is balance. You must make time for what is important. It changes day to day, and you must find the importance within each day. Read more>>

Daniel Odesanya Cherie Chua | Co-Founders of Luxe Bites

When we first started Luxe Bites, we came in 100 miles an hour and didn’t care too much about having a balance between work and life. We opened 7 days a week from 8am to midnight. We invested every ounce of energy into building the business up! Two years later, as entrepreneurs would understand, business never ends! However, we have put some great practices and habits in place so that we keep the passion up and stay far from burnout.  Read more>>

Mandi Tollefson | Creator of Tolly’s Treatments

Work-life balance, for me, continues to be an illusive beast. Every season of my life has been a massive ebb and flow of work and life. For example, juggling multiple schedules, a career in freelance TV production, and then becoming a full time mom of two and entrepreneur. In this season, my work and life usually need to blend seamlessly together, so balance can tend to get a little lost. For this very reason, I have built the Tolly’s brand with a dedication to a healthier lifestyle and a foundation of family first. Read more>>

Carlo Carere | Screenwriter, Actor, Novelist, Producer

All my life, I’ve worked long, hard hours. Before becoming a screenwriter, novelist, and actor, I was a Captain in the Carabinieri, which is roughly the Italian equivalent of the FBI. That is a job that demands long hours and deliberate attention to the cases you’re working on. Read more>>

Kelsey Hale | Photographer

Over time, my work-life balance has undergone a significant evolution. In the early stages of my career, I was completely consumed by work, often sacrificing personal time and neglecting the importance of maintaining a healthy balance. It was a phase characterized by long hours, constant deadlines, and a relentless drive to succeed.  Read more>>
