Taking Risk is essential, but how much, when and why? Taking risks effectively is as much of an art as it is a science and we’ve asked some of the brightest folks in the community to tell us about how they think about risk taking.

Nigel Sudarkasa | Actor, Singer/Songwriter and Poet

I think to take risks is to step towards the edge of the unknown and jump wholeheartedly without hesitation, knowing the danger but recognizing the beauty in the sights you might see on the way down. I believe the only way to truly grow is to push yourself to new heights. We as people were never meant to remain “comfortable” because in comfort there comes com[acency, and where there is complacency, there often follows a lack 0f motivation to change. Read more>>

I think I speak for everyone when I say that risk always comes with fear. When I was 18 years old I chose to make a real life crazy adult decision to move from Washington State to none other than Los Angeles itself. I felt absolutely crazy for moving at such a young age with no solid plan of what my life would be like. If it wasn’t for that life choice, I wouldn’t have had this very opportunity. I took a risk going over to someone’s home to “try” to form a song (this person is Omar Walrus, who is now someone I trust with my life). Read more>>

If it weren’t for taking some uncomfortable crazy risks in my journey, I can honestly say I don’t think I would be where I am. Some key moments in my life where I took those risks caused me to make huge leaps in my career, but also lead me to some of my greatest friendships and relationships that still deeply impact my life and growth as a person today. There was a time in my life where i started listening to the outside voices saying….”oh, you can’t do that!” Read more>>

I think risk taking is VERY important in life! The reward can be SO sweet if the risk pays off! No one is making it out of here alive so why not! Risk has shaped a big part of my life and made me who I am today. The first big risk I can remember taking was moving to California from Georgia at the age of 17 to attend California College of Music. I moved all the way across the country with no friends or family. That was such an eye opening experience for me. Read more>>

I have been a nurse for the last 10 years. This has given me a glimpse into some of my patients most personal end of life moments. Having had these experiences I am constantly reminded that life is short and it is what you make of it. This perspective has caused me to be willing to take a few more risks. Don’t get me wrong, I am always still nervous every time I jump into something new but I have not let that fear keep me from living. When I decided to open Claire’s Creperie I was working full time as a nurse and raising two teenagers. Read more>>

Taking risks is essential to growth. The more risks one takes, the more experience, perspective and knowledge the person acquires over time. Taking risks challenge us to become better. It enables us to step out of our comfort zone and try something new, something off-beat, something that changes the current status-quo. Growth is essentially what drives me out of bed each day. The hunger to learn something new everyday. No matter how small it may be, trying something new, or learning about something I have no idea about, helps me grow. It helps me understand different perspectives of the same concept. Read more>>

Becoming an Actor is as risky as you can possibly get. You’re literally depending on whoever is hired for casting to choose you in a crowd full of people. NOTHING is guaranteed no matter how big you are or your social status. Famous big time actors get rejected for rolls ALL the time…it’s truly about what you bring to the table…and who you know of course. When I think about risk I think about people who do and people who don’t….I am not a “Don’t” person, never have been. Read more>>

“Life is inherently risky. There is only one big risk you should avoid at all costs, and that is the risk of doing nothing.” – Denis Waitley This quote is a perfect representation for my perception of risk taking. I am a big believer that if you are staying in your comfort zone, nothing is going to change in your life. We only have one opportunity to live. We have one life and we are here to share our gifts with the world, as well as the next generation. Why shy away from it? Yes, risks are hard decisions that we have to take in order to get what we want in life. This can be challenging and scary, but in the end it can improve your quality of life. Read more>>

I think taking risks is necessary to learn more about yourself. I try not to be afraid to take risks because there are only two things that could happen: 1) you succeed and you’re stoked or 2) you fail and you learn where you went wrong and how to avoid doing that again. Risks are a great way to trigger personal growth. Taking risks allows you to challenge the norm and learn about yourself in the process. Read more>>

Calculated risk taking has completely altered the course of my life and career. I had a dream one night where I was shown every moment I had ever been afraid and how my fear kept me from completing that goal. It really blew my mind, I had no idea risk aversion and fear had such a strong grip on me! Luckily, every decision I’ve made or haven’t made has led me to this point. A place where I am now in a position to take advantage of all my hard work and dedication. Mistakes and losses are an essential part of life; there’s more to learn in defeat then there is in victory.
