Meet Sean McElwee | Reality Star, Entrepreneur & Keynote Speaker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sean McElwee and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sean, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I was on the tv show Born This Way and said a lot of funny things. Then I wrote a keynote speech and said “It Could Happen” and “That’s What Faith Can Do,” alot in the speech and I decided it would be fun to put those things on T-Shirts
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I was born with Down syndrome. Talking was always really hard for me and I mispronounced words a lot or was hard to understand. My parents understood me and would tell people they would translate for them because I spoke “Seanese.” My own language. So I named my t-shirt Company Seanese because it’s my words on the shirts. My parents never gave up on me talking f better and I worked really hard because I wanted to be on TV. When the docu-series “Born this Way” was looking for cast members I was ready and was talking better.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First we would go to Disneyland and ride my favorite rides. Then we would go to Laguna Beach and dance at the Marine Room Tavern and watch the sunset on top of the Rooftop bar. Then we would go to Hollywood and look for Stars and go to Universal Studios. We would hang out at the Santa Monica pier and go to the Magic Castle. Then we would go to a concert and see Demi Lovato and her sister Dallas Lovato because she’s my friend. I wish I could do all those things now. COVID-19 sucks.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The Down syndrome Association of Orange County has been there for my family from the day I was born and has supported me so much in my life.

I had the privilege to meet Sean a few weeks ago when I was in California with my husband. We set it up and met him at a park where him and my husband played basketball for almost two hours. This guy is SO amazing. He’s an everyday guy with such a positive attitude. He made us laugh a lot. We sat and talked with him for a bit as well and it was as if we’d know him forever. I am so thankful for his family setting the meeting up and allowing to meet such a wonderful friend!
