What habits do you feel helped you succeed?

There is a wealth of research that indicates that certain habits can help increase your productivity, creativity, and/or drive. So, we thought we’d reach out to respected members of our community and ask them what habits they feel helped them succeed.

he big one has been developing hobbies outside of acting. For so long, acting was my hobby and what I spent a good chunk of time doing outside of school. Now that acting has become my job and primary source of income, I’ve made it a priority to cultivate my interests and to really indulge in them. Read more>>

There are a few habits I believe helped me get to this point, and one of those is being consistent. Being an athlete all my life, it helped me build the discipline to do the consistent actions needed to move forward in my journey of business. I think one of the most important things that help me succeed in the things I set out to do and specifically speaking in my artistic career, is to have a lot of focus, determination and persistence, not giving up when things start to get difficult. Keeping your focus in general, on all the other activities you develop in life, helps you to follow through with your goals. I am a believer of consistency! Consistency as a habit has helped me tremendously. Burn out is real and can happen quick, so I set a schedule I can follow. I make lists that I know can be accomplished for the day. Sometimes we want to do everything and the truth is we can’t! We need to allow ourselves to break down bigger goals into smaller ones, so that we can be consistent with crushing them daily! Read more>>

Experimentation and earnest self discovery have always been integral to my practice. These habits have kept me developing and evolving without stagnating. Also certain rituals like biking, running regularly, playing basketball; they help me hash out ideas and work through processes off the canvas. Breaks from creativity are always good, being bored, reading, cooking, all of those things help distill ideas. Read more>>

I believe in brainstorming about projects that are interesting to me. I made a habit of taking tons of photos, playing around with colors in Adobe Lightroom, and writing stories behind paintings. I try put a lot of thought behind each creation. I also attempt to paint a wide variety of subjects – from portraits, landscapes, planets, abstracts, still life, etc. Read more>>

Oh, I love this question–so many things! Listening to my body and taking care of my instrument. LIVING and actually enjoying life. I think it’s also important to get out of your own way, don’t be scared, and stop overthinking it. I know that may not sound like a “habit” per se…but our mental ‘habits’ and self-talk are just as important as our task-oriented daily habits.
