We had the good fortune of connecting with Mickey Olvera and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mickey, looking back, what do you think was the most difficult decision you’ve had to make?
The question itself is very heartfelt to me. Five years ago I decided to pack up and move from Ventura to Los Angeles. I had been divorced 6 years, and i was starting a new relationship. That is a scary decision! No job, no real stability other than my relationship. I knew this was the right move. I knew if I got out here I could make something of myself. I manifested everything I wanted to accomplish. Even if it was ridiculous! I kept manifesting… I got a job with a dermatology office full time and I rented a booth at a tattoo studio for my body piercing. I knew one day I wanted to only work at my studio and leave the medical field behind. Within 3 years I tripled my salary and clientele! I was finally able to leave the medical field. I made my dreams come true. Now 5 years later I’m married to a wonderful supportive man who cheers me on never lets me doubt myself! If you keep that positive mental attitude you can make your dreams come true.

I take a unique and important approach to piercing. Bringing my medical background to this artistry creates a really professional experience for the people I pierce. It’s so important to me to create these beautiful adornments in a high-end environment. A new piercing can transform the way you feel about yourself, and I want everyone who visits to feel welcome and safe. I specialize in infant piercings and I’m grateful for the chance to connect with these little ones and their families, creating a special experience for them. It’s an important memory. Infant, college student, grandparent, or anyone in between – a new piercing on the outside helps you feel a little closer to who you are on the inside. I want to help create that feeling in a way no other piercer can.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There is so much to take in! Los Angeles is so diverse… so if it was my best friend Francene visiting, first I would take her to The Tonga Hut! My girl loves a great bar and this is a gem! Then for the view, dinner at Yamashiro… I had my engagement party there and it’s always good to know the head chef! And of course thru the week do all the touristy stuff ie Echo Park and paddle on the swan boats! Walk the Hollywood Walk of fame… the Observatory and maybe hit Santa Monica or Venice so that she can say “I’ve been there!” We love to eat so dinners would be our highlight. Central Market is an absolute MUST! But you can’t forget those great restaurants in Silver Lake…. Tatsunoya!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The woman who taught me how to be a business owner and entrepreneur. She is my mentor and I am extremely grateful for her guidance… she is Justine Serebrin owner of Earth Altar Tattoo Studio located in Eagle Rock
