We had the good fortune of connecting with Dezert Skorpion and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dezert, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
When you find yourself questioning yourself, feeling fear, and outright emotional when the ebb comes in running your business or perusing your artistry, then you know to keep going. You have to adjust the equalizer of your career to balance everything out. If you’ve given up, then none of the above would have happened in the first place. Everything would just be cut right then and there.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My artistry in hip hop/rap can be diverse. On one project, I could be rapping purely about current events. On another project, I could just be all over the place just having fun. On others? I can get pensive and dabble in the love realm just for a second to reel in a larger female fan base. What I’m most excited about now is being able to do my work independently without the help of a major label. That in itself allows me to own every piece of work I create and to have my creative freedom. Remaining persistent and consistent with creating and releasing my music, gaining more connections via networking in different channels, and going with the grain got me to where I am today helping me overcome any challenges placed in my path. Gaining traction in the industry is never easy. What I’ve learned is this: KEEP WORKING! People notice when you are working. People that you would never think in 100 years would be paying you attention will be giving you the most. This is what I want the world to know about me: put on your seatbelts. It’s about to get fun.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Santa Monica is my go to spot if I wanted to just get away. Beach, pier, women, food, women, ocean, women, breeze, and oh yeah…women. As far as getting in the mix of LA? Do what I usually do: network around the county from 9 am to about 12 when I get hungry. Chic Fil A is where I’m headed. After the food is done, sight seeing. Who doesn’t like to sight see as long as it’s done safely? After that’s done, who doesn’t like a little live music? The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Stickx G first and foremost. If it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t be on the west coast to begin with having this conversation. I also would like to thank Full Sail University for giving me the tools needed to pursue my career paths. Solace is another I would like to shout out. If it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t be in the music scene as deep as I am now in Las Vegas and LA. Fourth is to everyone doing something artistic in Vegas and LA. We keep eachother going!
