Meet John Borack: Author/Music Journalist/Drummer

We had the good fortune of connecting with John Borack and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi John, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
I would like my legacy to be my children, because no matter how many books I write, gigs I play or songs I record, my children will always be my greatest achievement in life.
If people do remember me, I would like them to remember me as a good, decent person with a passion for music, people and life.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am an author with four music-focused books to my credit, as well as a contributing editor for Goldmine Magazine, a national music collectors’ publication. I have been writing reviews of new music and reissues for Goldmine since 1986, and I also pen a regular column (“Power Pop Plus”) that is featured on their website. I have been a Beatles fan since the tender age of 5, and two of my books are Beatles-related: 2010’s “John Lennon: Life is What Happens” and my latest, titled “The Beatles 100.” In addition, I am a drummer for the Los Angeles-based pop-rock combo The Armoires, and I also drum in several cover bands (Popdudes, the Test Pressings, the Used Electrics and Let it Be).
Whether it’s listening to it, playing it or writing about it, music is my passion and something that has always been a constant in my life.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I tend to favor hole in the wall types of places, so I would probably want to hang at a small club and take in an indie rock show (COVID-permitting , of course), do some shopping at my favorite Los Angeles-area record store, Freakbeat Records, and check out several eating establishments. If I was on my home turf in Orange County, I would visit Los Sanchez Mexican Restaurant in Garden Grove and indulge in their amazing carne asada.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my children Kayla and Michael, who inspire everything I do. I would also like to dedicate a sub-shoutout (haha) to my parents, John F. Borack and Catherine Borack, who always supported me in all I attempted.
