We had the good fortune of connecting with Brady and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brady, where are you from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I grew up in a nice town outside of Boston. It was a great place to grow up but it took a while for me to appreciate it (I’m sure I’m not alone in the love/hate relationships with hometowns!).
When I came out as gay during my Freshman year of high school, I was one of the few queer kids in my high school. I think I blamed the town itself for feeling like a fish out of water – it had such little diversity that I sometimes felt like all eyes were on me (not in the good way) and I couldn’t wait to get out.
It felt really difficult at the time but, in retrospect, I think coming out at a young age in a small town did incredible things for my future. I had to figure myself out pretty early on and above all, it allowed me to dive in deep with what I loved – music and theater. I relished in those safe art communities where being different or outside the “norm” was actually cool and celebrated, and I developed an undying passion for the arts.
Now here I am, 16 years later, still living and breathing those passions. I’m SO happy to be doing what I love, happy to have the undying support of my family, and happy for my little hometown because it made me find myself early and made me dream big.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a music artist. I write all my own songs I love to make music that makes you feel. I think lyrics and melodies should play off each other, build together, fall together, hit hard together, and make an impact.
Growing up, I wasn’t the biggest fan of mainstream female pop artists – perhaps because there was never an artist I could highly identify with as a gay, femme, teenager and young adult, or may because I felt mainstream music washed down lyrics and melodies – and instead listened to a good mixture of sounds such as Tegan & Sara, Elliott Smith, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Korn.
I aim to be that artist that I never had growing up – an unapologetically gay artist with approachable, beautiful, and catchy songs that have depth, but can still be appreciated by the masses.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am obsessed with Culver City. It is such a gem for restaurants and coffee shops. In downtown Culver the historic Culver Hotel is so beautiful and there are so many great restaurants around that strip. Citizen Public Market is amazing – it has a bunch of different places to grab food and drinks and an incredible rooftop where I love to work on my laptop by day and share a bottle of wine with friends by night.
I don’t think it’s technically in Culver City but I highly recommend checking out Sachi. It’s a coffee shop with the best lattes in LA, and they just added on a plant shop/record store combo (record store run by Dusty Records).
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have been working with a life coach Whitney Uland, of Abundant Artist Coaching, for the last 2 years. She has changed the way I show up for myself and for my artistry. The concept behind life coaching is that your thoughts create your results and my-oh-my is it true. With Whitney’s help I discovered how my thoughts and beliefs led me to set low standards for myself and hindered my growth significantly, and then was given the coaching and tools to turn those thoughts around and gain the confidence and belief to create the results I desire. She’s super cool and fun and I really love how far I’ve come with her coaching.
