Meet Maud Lazzerini | Director, Producer and Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Maud Lazzerini and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maud, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
For as far as I can remember, I have always been obsessed with filmmaking. I grew up as an only child in a small town in the region of Burgundy in France; and having not much to do, I would watch hundreds of movies a year. When I was a teen, it became obvious to me that this was the best way to express myself and I started directing low budget short films. And never stopped directing since.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My taste for glitters, showgirls and women driven plots are definitely what has been setting me apart since film school. Now it sounds almost like a cliché, but when I was 20 I was very annoyed at only seeing all male-based story lines. I felt like as a girl, all that was supposed to be made for me was romcom. And I wanted to do – and see – something different.
And so, when I was 22, I wrote and directed a short film about a middle aged attorney going through menopause and struggling between a growing sex drive and the fact that she doesn’t want to feel objectified. And in the end, it’s by attending a burlesque show that she manages to reconnect with her sexuality.

So, I would say that to mix women issues with glitters is my speciality. Femininity, sexuality, showgirls and free expression have become part of my art and creative process since the very beginning. Even when I started photography a couple of years ago when I moved to the US, my first models were burlesque performers, and still are my most precious collaborators to this day.

Even when I do a shoot for a brand, I do try to put that extra glitter on it that reflects my vision and universe.
After all, I did name my production company, Glitz Entertainment.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
So…I moved to LA at the end of February 2020, two short weeks before the lockdown. My experience of LA is quite different than most locals. However, I would take them straight to the Beach: El Matador, Pacific Palisades or Venice. Depending on the mood. I would then take them to the movies, the New Beverly to see some classics ON FILM! Then, we would probably head out to Pink’s for a hot dog. It’s a cliché, but a damn good one!
Of course, Griffith Park…It kept me sane and healthy through Covid.
For food, there is this place in NoHo that I love, Kahuna Tiki, it’s a tiki bar that does Hawaiian food AND sushi. Who can resist? It’s all outdoor and super cute.
I also love The Formosa Cafe, and I am looking forward for Musso and Frank to reopen so I can finally go!
And when live entertainment is going to be back, I’ll definitely will go see some burlesque shows.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My creative crew back in Paris has been the most important support I could ever asked for when I first started my director career. When I moved back to Paris from New York in 2014, I was determined to direct a short film. To do so, I reconnected with my French film school classmates. I was so inspired by their trust in me to write and direct a project that they would be willing to give their time and skills for. It pushed me to work harder.
Thanks to that drive to not disappoint them, the short film, Bachelorette Party, received funding quite quickly, then find distribution and received accolades at A-list international film festivals. I don’t know if I would have gone that far without their support, from my producers, to the editor, the director of photography to the grip…
And after that short film, I got my first gig as a director and hired them from one gig to the other. And they always inspired me to do my best, and to keep that amazing crew together stayed a goal during each project. Now my most important goal here in LA is to find myself a new creative crew I can work with.
