We had the good fortune of connecting with Kamilah and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kamilah, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Hey Batter Batter wasn’t the first business I’ve had or started. But the decision came after hosting a brunch. But before that, I had embarked on a transformational journey. I had gone through and graduated from Compass Trainings, a Leadership/ Legacy program.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Hey Batter Batter is a female, Black Owned batter and food business, that specializes in all things waffles. We have changed the way you eat a waffle. Our niche is NO SYRUP NEEDED. All of our waffles can be eaten without syrup. Our motto, “We are more than just Waffles, We are an Experience”. We have an array of waffle creations: Waffle Bowls, waffle tacos, unicorn/colored waffles, Stuffed Waffles, Waffle Dogs (corn dog), mini waffles, Belgian Waffles, Grilled Cheese Waffles, bubble waffles, and waffle cones. We do some fun and amazing things with our dry batter and it gives a unique flavor to our fried chicken and waffle fries.

I am most proud of taking my foot off of the break and building a business from scratch. I am excited to see my business grow and become a household brand name. I got to where I am in business by staying consistent and making great quality food. I treat my MVP’s (customers) they way I would want to be treated. Recognizing who I can lean on for support and business guidance. Learning how to navigate Instagram to build a following. Being open to feedback. Adjusting when my friend’s tell me that I need to take better pictures. Being open to feedback when my friend tells me that I need to include fried chicken on the menu. He even suggested frying my chicken in my dry waffle batter. Taking a risk to apply to sell at a Farmer’s Market, knowing I don’t have everything I need to do so. And doing it until they tell me I can’t anymore. Food is a universal and love language, especially when good. Running a business that allows you to be passionate and contribute to others, makes it easy. The biggest challenge is the balancing act sometimes. I work full-time, I am a mother, and I have a personal life.

I have learned so many lessons. One, I learned how to maximize my 24 hours. I have learned the importance of giving insight to my MVP’s (customers). I have learned to fear nothing, just do it. Take the risk and figure it out along the way. Adjust as needed.

I want the world to know that we are here on purpose. Discover your purpose and do your life’s work. Hey Batter Batter has and will continue to allow me to do my life’s work. I am most fulfilled when I am at the service of others, What better way to be of service than to feed and serve others. I am a natural creative. So making as many waffle creations and menu items that I have, allows me to feed my creative side. I have a way of contributing and impacting others, naturally. Hey Batter Batter will allow me to reach the masses on a global level. My brand will become a global brand.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The day would probably start at my house with some Hey Batter Batter for breakfast. Then we may head to Long Beach and rent bikes for a few hours. We’d work up an appetite and head to one of my favorite restaurants in Los Alamitos. If it’s for a week, we will probably eat 3 times a day. Mastro’s, Captain Jacks, Woodranch, and Yamashiro. We’d go bowling, grab some ice cream on the boardwalk, maybe even rent a boat for a day.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’ve gotta shout out my bro Jojo and my bro Ron. They are my go to when it comes to business. They are always lending an ear, insight, feedback, ideas, and support. I also want to shout out my Soul Sista Nicole, my crew 6 tha Hardway, B.O.N.E, Eugene of Compton Grocery Outlet, and T of Compton’s Black Exchange! All of our MVP’s, followers, and supporters! And lastly, my team! My son Makhi, my nephew Josh, and our Allstar Raina!
