We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michael, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
I do have a favorite quote in terms of my work/career. I have a friend that I used to work with in a music studio every day. I would often have a bad attitude towards work related tasks that forced me to leave the studio and do actual work (photo shoots, meetings, etc…). Keep in mind, I am technically “living my dream” in terms of being a musical artist for a career. Anyway, one day I was complaining about having to do something and he made me aware of the mantra, “You don’t HAVE to do it, you GET to do it.” Basically it is a very simple way of transforming your attitude toward a task. What makes something “work” or “fun” is really just your own outlook on said thing. I still struggle with this but I will never forget that quote and I have told it to many people since who have enjoyed it as well.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I am a musician. I rap, sing, produce music, write songs, play guitar, and some other musical things as well. I have been doing that since I was a small child. It took a very long time to get to where I am today. I wasn’t able to actually live off my art until I was 30. I wouldn’t say that I am “proud” of anything, but I do have a bunch of music and videos and what not out on the internet. I go by Wax, you can find a bunch of my music on youtube and spotify. That said, there are a lot of people named Wax. That is what I am least proud of… not having an original name.
I am not in the right mind frame to answer these kinds of questions maybe. I don’t “want the world to know something about my brand” . I guess what makes me less successful than I probably should be is that I don’t think like that. I have never I asked myself that question and I don’t think in those types of grandiose terms. Maybe I should.
Yes it was a lot of hard work to get to where I am at. The main lesson is just the never ending one that is STAMINA.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to The Comedy Store as well as some type of independent comedy show. Obviously Venice Beach. Korean BBQ in ktown.
I don’t know I am boring. I don’t drink or party any more.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Sure. I have an identical twin brother that I have created music with since I was a little kid. Every career decision and artistic choice that I make in my life is somewhat funneled through him before being finalized. Shoutout to Chris aka Herbal T! Love you bro.
