Meet Magical Katrina Kroetch | Magician and Circus performer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Magical Katrina Kroetch and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Magical Katrina, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started performing magic shows in Los Angeles as a Magician in Hollywood while working for a different magic show children’s party company as a princess at children’s birthday parties in Los Angeles. I was always doing magic shows in Los Angeles several hours away from my home in Hollywood and driving a lot. My boss was always promising longer magic shows and more activities than I could do in an hour to these clients. The company I worked for was also booking me for very little money. I felt very stretched thin and tired after doing my magic shows in Los Angeles and I realized I could have a more flexible life, work closer to home and provide better quality work and more enjoyable magic shows in Los Angeles if I started my own magician in Los Angeles Company. So that’s why I started working with clients directly to do magic shows for birthday parties in Los Angeles. I began booking events directly with clients to perform exciting and mind-blowing close up magic as a wedding magician in Los Angeles, birthday party magician in Los Angeles, and a Corporate Magician in Los Angeles. I was able to provide better entertainment and not over-promise on things like my old boss would do. Talking to my clients directly and being able to be flexible and create special and unique magic for their events was really cool . Now that I’m my own business I can talk to clients directly and provide a personalized experience which they like much better than interacting with a faceless big company. I have had great luck ever since working on my own being a magician in Los Angeles, I’m happy I took the risk and went after my dream!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started my career in magic much later than most professionals and enthusiasts. I didn’t catch the magic bug until I was already an adult well into getting paid to perform as a magical princess. It sounds crazy but I started performing a solo magic show before I even knew what a double lift or a french drop was. The princess party company I worked for at eighteen taught me the gimmicks behind a dove pan, a change bag, thumb tip, magic coloring book and NOTHING ELSE about how to actually perform magic with a script in an engaging or interesting way. It was my first adult job and I was thrown into the deep end doing children’s parties with no life jacket or back up plan. It was scary and I made a lot of mistakes.
As Elsa, Snow White, Cinderella and many more beloved characters I “performed” several genuinely terrible and extremely awkward magic shows for children. They were just awful. My magic was an absolute dumpster fire and the kids could tell. I didn’t know what I was doing. Anyone who works with kids knows how painfully honest they can be. Since my princess job was basically sink or swim I had to learn fast; believe me, I did.
I’ve had growing pains and in the last eight years I have dropped the character costumes, stopped working for kids party companies, and am now entirely out on my own. Now I get to do magic for children as myself and also perform for more sophisticated events such as weddings and corporate clients.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them to Venice Beach to ride bikes, hiking on Runyan Canyon, to the Magic Castle in Hollywood and to Tonga Hut in Burbank for yummy tiki drinks.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a shoutout to Paul Nathan who was my magic mentor and inspired me when I was younger. You can check out his work at www.badmagician.com
