Meet Soma Ori | Music Producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Soma Őri and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Soma, why did you pursue a creative career?
I have been around music since I can remember. I started learning the drums very early. I went to music school, I learned music theory and drums for thirteen years before graduating there. I always gravitated towards creative hobbies and creative fields so I took communication and media studies as my major in university. I graduated in 2019 and I am currently doing my masters in communications. I like how this career path complements my music career. I can be creative in both fields. I can not imagine myself without music, it is deeply rooted in me so I guess I did not really had a choice.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am currently doing my solo project under the alias “shen”. I am making lo-fi hip-hop and downtempo music. I am trying to incorporate my vivid memories from the early 2000’s Hungary somehow in my music. I was just a child back then, I didn’t really realize any hardships, overall I was a happy kid. The vibe from that era is still present here and there. I am trying to find these small ‘cracks in time’ and convert them to music. My latest release is an EP called “Rainy Changes”. I think the late 90’s and early 2000’s vibe is really resonating in these four tracks, especially the last song ‘rooftop’. My new single is coming out on August 2. It is an A-side B-side with the tracks “Mensiki” and “Hoshino”. Haruki Murakami’s novels inspired these two tracks.”

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would definitely visit the ruin pubs in Budapest. Great vibe. We would take a trip to lake Balaton with the boys. House parties and chilling on the beach… I kind of wanna go down there right now as I am thinking about this haha.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My best friend Adam definitely deserves a shoutout. We have been doing music together for a long time, we’ve been through some great projects as a duo. So yeah shoutout to Adam! Also shoutout to all the teachers I had, who taught me a lot of useful music knowledge.
And lastly my family of course. They always support me no matter what happens. They are my biggest fans. My brother is a professional musician, he is a bass player. I can always count on him for great in-depth feedback on my music.
