We had the good fortune of connecting with Charlie Kendall and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Charlie, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Originally it started as 80% work and 20% life. When I first left school I felt this need to work and to freelance more after work, and anything I could fit within the work week was fair game. While I still find myself working a lot, I have also found the importance of maintaining hobbies, exercise, and friendships outside of work. It’s vital to how I maintain my creative practice. Really any aspect of work or life has to be fueled by something else, so now I am constantly trying to fill myself with experiences and not just work.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I love creating work that ties all of my interests together, and it’s important that I am constantly looking for new skills and places for inspiration to feed that. I don’t think a career in art is ever easy, but I am fortunate to have support and resources to draw from to smooth some of the edges. A lot that has helped me is stepping back and working on not feeling pressure to create and share work all the time, and doing an assessment on if I’m happy with what I am making and doing.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
LA Historic Park Ballona Creek Bike path (If you have a bike)
LA River bike paths

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Anyone that I have had a positive experience with deserves credit because it has influenced me a bunch and propels me forward in all aspects of my life. Friends, family, and mentors. I have met so many people that deserve credit.
