We had the good fortune of connecting with Daniel Broadhurst and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Daniel, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Balancing work and life is a fundamental part of a successful and rewarding career. I have spent many hours on projects that have been a key component of my development as an artist and businessman and it took me many years to discover without balance, the work has no way to breathe. Stepping out of your work has given me a fresh perspective and a unique understanding of why I do what I do and the rewards seem to be more fulfilling because I take time to enjoy the world outside of my work. It took me a long time to come to terms with this as I was hungry to be successful but now, I realize that success is what you do with your time. Whether it is in a friendly chat over coffee with an old friend or a vacation with the family. Work has no reward without a life of enjoyment. I took a month off to support a friend in a recent family loss and in that time I was bombarded with work. It took me several days to see that work is something that will come and go all the time, but life and its unique moments have a way to happen less frequently. Therefore, they are the moments that define a life and shape the character people will remember. Being present is a skill in itself and life has a way of passing by quickly. To work for the lifestyle you want requires attention in the life you strive to live. To be balanced in all aspects of your work-life takes time and patience and this can come and go at different times. I have found when I am unbalanced, that a simple walk around my block or a bit of gardening, centers and reminds me that I am not defined by the time I put in to work, but rather the way I use the time to live.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart from the other creatives is the struggles I have dealt with in my life and used to promote a fearless and problem-solving attitude in the work. I approach all my projects from a place of love and compassion and can look at a project from many angles to detail and sharpen the concept. Being a diverse artist, I can understand and produce many parts that together, promote a style that has a signature known to my craft. Collaboration is extremely important for me and finding unique abilities to add to the work has helped me produce wildly imaginative projects that represent more than just one person or a community, but a world of independent thinkers. And this was not an easy task. I was very stubborn as a young artist and wanted everything my way, but my work suffered. It wasn’t until I understood that the feedback usually came from love, promoting a better version for everyone to enjoy and feel they were a part of the experience, for me to incorporate this lesson into all my future projects. I have learned that everyone has something to add or at least a point of view worth hearing. By taking the time to hear what makes people process information, I have discovered that being submerged in a project can make you easily miss things that others can clearly see.
I always want to promote creativity as it has helped me understand so much of my own life and the questions I’ve needed to answer to keep progressing as a human. Art for me has taught me everything I’ve needed to know to survive and thrive in this overwhelming and confusing world.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Some of my favourite spots in LA for good vibes and food are Cena Vegan on 5052 York Blvd, Los Angeles, for plant-based Mexican street-truck-style food. In fact, that entire street is a great area for speakeasy bars, tattoo shops, and boutique stores for every type of special gift. I enjoy taking my friends to Venice beach and walking along the boardwalk but my favourite beach is the little patch at Marina Del Rey beside the farmers market, open on Saturdays.
For a warm and exciting crowd, I adore Pasadenas ‘Old Town’ for all the vibrant eclectic people and its very own IPIC movie theatre which is a cross between a bar/restaurant with its reclining comfy movie chairs and personal table service.
And to hang out, I lean towards the arts district in downtown LA as I never get bored of the day/nightlife that is constantly morphing through the seasons.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have met many incredible humans on my journey and there is no way to list them all here. However, my success would not have flourished without a certain few. Firstly, the love of my life Fabiola has been a constant support and reminder of how I should always strive to do and be my best in all aspects of my life. Without her wisdom and efforts to help my business grow, I would not have the drive I have today. My work colleague and best friend Fernando has been nothing but a complete artistic inspiration and has always encouraged me to make work that pushes boundaries and aims for an excellence that I would not have found without his focus and drive. And to finish with an idol, Charles Chaplin and his body of work have driven me to be an artist that goes beyond what I thought was possible and has kept me wanting to dive into more creative avenues that have made me a more rounded and detailed artist.
