Meet Terence Hamers | DJ & Producer (TER3NCE)

We had the good fortune of connecting with Terence Hamers and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Terence, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think taking risks are very important in life, but be cautious. I’ve taken the ”risk” to just walk down to people and ask what they think of my music. I’ve taken the ”risk” to go to a management team while I was just at the beginning of my career. Not a lot of people do that and I think in order for any kind of success, you need to take the risk and just go after it. It can be anything, maybe you’re struggling with a project that doesn’t really work out in your eyes, or maybe you haven’t heard just enough feedback for it. Feedback is the key to get something at a perfect level, of course your own personal preference is what’s the most important, but hearing what other people think about your product is really worth a lot. Taking risks have taken my career to another level, by doing that i’m now working with a music label and management team. But you always have to feel your gut, if it doesn’t feel right, then don’t, but if it does, then go for it.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Well, I started producing in my bedroom when I was around 13 years old with a laptop. I installed FL Studio because I saw everybody online using it, so I tried it out and made my first couple of songs. These songs were of course really awful, and didn’t sound like anything you’d hear on the radio, but I was having fun, and that’s what it’s all about! When I got older I really started getting into producing professionally, I knew that there was a producing school in The Netherlands called the Herman Brood Academy and everything in my gut told me that this was the right school for me to go to. I had 2 years to develop my sound good enough to sign up for this school. So I worked a lot on making music and I did not really spent a lot of time on my school were I was at that time. 2 years later, and I signed up for the school, and got accepted! I was so happy and felt so relieved that everything was actually going as planned. Since then I learned so much new theory on this school and worked on new music all the time. Thanks to this school, I’ve found myself a management and a music label where we work with right now. These steps weren’t always easy, I found myself sometimes getting stuck where I didn’t finish any music, but I’ve learned that in order to get to a professional level, you have to get through these hard times and just get better and better.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
You know, Amsterdam is always fun, lot of interesting people and places where you can go to. The canals are really beautiful there. But there are a lot of fun amusement parks here that’s pretty easy to access because The Netherlands is pretty small. Also I would go to some amazing clubs and have a great time in general.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Man, there are a lot of people I really look up to. I think the person that fits best to my story is Fox Stevenson. He’s just always so positive and can explain his way of producing and thinking really good to others. First time i’ve seen him live was at a festival here in The Netherlands where he played a Drum ‘n Bass set, that moment was going to be the switch for me to finally produce and release Drum ‘n Bass tracks. The vibe live was so amazing, I felt a time of energy i’ve never felt before. His sets are so energetic, and he really puts on a good show. Such an amazing artist and person in general.
