We had the good fortune of connecting with Robyn Sapico and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Robyn, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
I think recently, more light has come to what goes on behind the scenes thanks to social media. The abundance of tagging photographers, visual artists, VJ’s, etc has helped the public see the bigger picture. I have made art, social media assets, visuals, and run visuals as well, but all of that takes a lot more time than people realize. It’s been wonderful seeing who the team is behind the act and in turn, seeing even more work to influence my own art.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
It’s actually funny because I currently work full time at a cancer research facility. I make all my art on the side and have been for a few years now. The work/life/art balance isn’t easy, and I have had my share of creative droughts, but always push through some how. My boyfriend has always always said to me that it’s more important to show up every day, and I can honestly say it helps. Even if I hate what I’m making 4 days in a row, some “AHA!” moment pops in on the 5th day for example and I just run with it.
For a while now, I stepped away from 3D work and just focused on painting, collaging, digital illustrations, and it’s been wonderful. I think it’s healthy to step away from the medium you’re familiar with every once in a while, and try something different.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh dang, that’s hard. Going downtown and grabbing a drink from Bar Ama is a must. Getting all you can eat shabu-shabu from Shabuya or AYCE from Bulgogi Hut is always a fantastic experience as well. My favorite happy hour spot is near LAX and it’s called Cinco, so we HAVE to go there. Other than a massive food tour, I’d love to show off my hometown of Palos Verdes and possibly go whale watching, if it’s the season!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Oh gosh….well my best friend and boyfriend are two of the most creative people I’ve ever met. They work so hard at what they do and I admire them greatly. Adam, who is part of UNTLD, has given me so many opportunities and I will never ever figure out how to repay that guy. And Ryan, aka Ghostdad, taught me almost all I know about Resolume, the VJ software. He has given me advice time and time again about my own work and how to push things further and I appreciate it more than he knows.
