Meet Brea Holmes | Costume Designer and Fashion Designer for Electrik Misfits

We had the good fortune of connecting with Brea Holmes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brea, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process to starting my own business has always been to fill in a need. For me, I love the look of tech wear and futuristic inspired clothing. However, I don’t want to spend my ENTIRE paycheck doing so. Thus, I created Electrik Misfits to fill in that need. If I find it as a need in the apparel industry to have affordable futuristic clothing, then other people would want the same. I wanted EM to be the fill in with the futuristic vibe that I loved at a price that anyone can afford.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am most proud of all that I have accomplished with Electrik Misfits and my Costume Designing Career. EM is still in it’s infancy, but it is chugging along and I can’t wait to see where the line goes and what I can give and learn from it. Similarly, with my Costume Designing career, I have recently been so excited to be apart of some amazing projects and I can’t wait to see what is in store for me in the future.
It definitely has not been easy on both fronts. Sleepless nights. Coming home from my day job (Costume Design) to working on Electrik Misfits till the late night. I know that my hardwork will pay off on both ends, because of how invested I am. When I want something I’m going to go ALL IN.
I want people to know that Electrik Misfits was made from a black woman that loves anime, sci fi and a good outfit. I wanted to fill in the gap with EM for people that are like me and don’t want to break the bank. I want you to feel good when you wear EM. Not only is it sci-fi inspired, but it’s sustainable as well.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m a homebody at heart but I love to go out every now and again….So, this is how the day would pan out:
Breakfast @ Lift Coffee Roasters…. I live in Whittier and this coffee spot is always poppin’, and I have never seen it on a slow day I love. It gives off this hipster vibe and they have great coffee and food.
My best friend and I both love museums, so we would hit up either LACMA or The Broad.
Lunch @ Vespaio….I found this place recently and they have amazing Italian food
Snack @ Chami Tea Bar…..I’m a sucker for a Vietnamese Ice Coffee and this literally does it for me every time
Dinner @ RA Sushi….Do I have to say anymore….my best friend and I love sushi

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Where do I start….I would have to say from the beginning, my parents were a big source of all the above. My parents have always been entrepreneurs. They have owned their own nail salons, coffee shops, clothing lines and now they have a tv network in the works called, “The Honey Lifestyle Network”. I’ve watched them and was inspired by their tenacity, resilience and success in all of their endeavors. Thus, at the age of 16, my younger sister and I started our own lifestyle brand called, “Sweet Dream Girlz”. We were able to learn and guided by my parents throughout that process, and now it has brought me here with EM.
Also, throughout my career a costume designer and an assistant costume designer. I have been privileged to work under some amazingly talented people that have helped guide me in my career as well.
