Meet Rocky Singhvi | Creative Director of Rocky Star Fashion

We had the good fortune of connecting with Rocky Singhvi and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rocky, what are you inspired by?
I like to get inspired by everything around me. The strong and powerful people around me often inspire me to keep striving for something new. Experimenting and being myself, speaking my own mind through my designs and making clothes for people who like to feel powerful through their clothes. For example, for my Autumn-Winter collection, the main source of my inspiration was powerful women. Hence the name “Shakti: The Eternal Power”. I wanted to bring forth a collection that was wearable, bold and eternal. Pieces that never go out of style and contribute to the growth of fashion. Fashion is not just about being trendy, it evolves with us. And there are a few pieces and silhouettes that age with us, so that really pushed me into making this collection.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I express my creativity through my designs, as I mentioned earlier, it has to do a lot with the people I observe. I suppose what sets me apart from saying other designers around me is the factor that I want to create clothes that are timeless. I create not just for what people want right now, but for what they will continue to cherish decades later. No success comes easy, sure there were a few advantages I had but what helped me during tough times was patience. The pace we set for our course is very important. Knowing where to wait and where to not, it’s very important. It correlates to the clothes I make. Time is a very patient teacher and that’s the idea I apply to my art. I’m working towards making a space in the long run. I get inspired by both the old and the new. Both the past and future inspire me to create something in the present.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Mumbai is a very fun city to visit. I have been living in Mumbai almost my whole life and I have never gotten tired of it. There are new spaces to explore in each corner, and fun events take place every day for all sorts of activities. It is after all said that Mumbai never sleeps. Besides the iconic, must-see places in Mumbai like the gateway or the art galleries. There is, of course, the Rocky Star Cocktail Bar that is upcoming as one of the must-visit places. The city offers so much scope in terms of food and hangout spaces, there is also the Prithvi Theatre, Leopold cafe and even Candies in Bandra which are places one should visit on their trip to Mumbai. To escape the hustle-bustle of the city I would definitely suggest a one day trip to my villa in Ambey Valley, which is on the outskirts of Mumbai; it’s a peaceful gate away for anyone to escape reality.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
While being a creative person doesn’t take much effort, it takes a team to bring that creativity to life. And I don’t think I would be where I am if I worked alone. No art is made in isolation and I think for sure my family who stood by me as pillars. My entire design team and of course the artisans who dedicate themselves to making my imagination come to life.
