We had the good fortune of connecting with Lusine Saakyan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lusine, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Early Childhood Educator with a degree found her passion in Arts.  So last year I left my job of over 15 years as a program director of a preschool and went into business for myself where I combined my love of teaching and passion for art.  For me providing art education classes for children and sparking the appreciation towards the arts is very rewarding. Being a freelancer gave me the freedom and flexibility on how I spend my creative time in productive and self-fulfilling way.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

My Art career started as an outlet for healing and it worked its magic. I learned to be strong, self-reliant, and resilient. I am a self-taught artist and I create from what comes to my head.  My paintings are imaginative, stylized, colorful, and textured. My art mirrors combination of different art styles yet stands out with my unique touch.  I believe it transforms as I go through transformation. I own and embrace everything that brought me here today without regrets.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

Let’s visit my hometown Glendale, our Jewel City.  I grew up and still reside in this beautiful city.  Glendale has the largest Armenian population away from Yerevan, Armenia where I was born. Our morning walk will begin at a spacious Palmer Park not far away from where I live. Then the smell of fresh baked nazook (Armenian traditional sweet pastry) will lead us to close by Art Bakery where we can sit and enjoy Armenian coffee. In the afternoon we will stop by for a quick visit to Tufenkian Art Gallery across the Glendale Central Public Library for inspiration. Lunch will follow a walking distance away at a famous Raffi’s Place restaurant for shish kabob skewers and other tasty dishes. We can wrap up our day over signature cocktails at the Tavern Bar on Brand Blvd where talented Armenian musicians like Pianist Vardan Ovsepian and cello player Artyom Manukyan will amaze us with their jazz music. Glendale is a beautiful city rich with diversity, culture, and traditions.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
