We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel Turner and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rachel, what makes you happy? Why?
Call me basic, but supporting others brings me immense joy. As one of eight kids, me being the third oldest and first girl, I’ve always been around others and found joy in being there for people. When you grow up, they tell you that you need to take care of yourself first in order to take care of other people. I’m here to tell you that truer words have never been spoken. Ever. But I never had a big sister growing up and that led me down a road of discovering what it meant to take care of myself on my own. Then, me being the extrovert that I am (who loves to talk), I started sharing what I’d learned to others who felt they didn’t have their “someone” to ask either and that brought me here. Finding joy and happiness from sharing the tips and turns in my life with others.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a professional actor, content creator, and currently a server as well! I grew up in the musical theater world from middle school on and that fed my love for drama which pushed me to pursue it professionally and personally (for fun, lol). I’ve been been working professionally since I was 11 years old, starting in commercials. From there, I got a BFA in Acting and shortly after moved to LA to continue pursuing my career in a bigger market. I’ve been very blessed to have worked on some awesome commercials out here and now two films with Lifetime (both came out in January of 2022). I’m very proud of the career I’m building and to say it has been easy would be a total lie. A big part of my content is not just authenticity, but telling the whole truth about my day-to-day life as a young actor who is pursuing a career and who also has 3 side hustles. I grew up seeing people share their big career wins and never knowing about the little stuff. (Like how they pay for their apartment when they aren’t working consistently or how they afford to be in LA, in general!). So when I go to my social media to make content and share what’s happening, I share everything. I want my followers to know that you can pursue a career and also have other jobs that cover your expenses while you’re working on ~building~ that career. I want them to know that hustling towards your dream and patiently waiting, potentially years, for a win, that it doesn’t make you a failure (and it definitely doesn’t mean you aren’t talented). All great careers take years to build and mine doesn’t have a clear path to success, so I’m defining it for myself. Success, to me, means taking a step farther then I did the day before in the direction that I want to go. Sometimes that’s meeting someone who I admire/respect, getting an audition (that’s a big win that we shouldn’t discount!), paying my bills on time, having a great day/night at my side hustle, or even getting the house vacuumed when I had a busy week. There is so much power in defining what a win means to us and I want my followers to be reminded and encouraged to do so when they watch my content.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Ooh, this is a fun question because LA is the mixing bowl of all things great in the world. We have the sights, the sounds, and all the best smells. When my peeps come in town, I love to set up a day at the beach! We start with coffee and breakfast sandwiches from Superba (they have a great GF option), then we pop by Pitfire to grab pizzas for the road (I go pesto chicken with a GF crust everytime), and we head to Malibu! After our day in the sun, I like to stop by Osteria La Buca for a yummy dinner. Can you tell I love carbs? La Buca has handmade pastas, an insane wine menu, and the best chocolate mousse I’ve ever had. You just can’t skip out on it.
Not to be forgotten, when we’re down for a girl’s day, I take my peeps to Ellie and Sass in Venice. The women there are so lovely and the services always leave me feeling fresh and cared for! Currently obsessed with the hydrafacial and All-In mani/pedi for the ultimate “treat yo self” day.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My person and my family deserve all the recognition. I truly would not be here without their support. For my family, they’ve supported me through school transitions, moving across the country, and pursuing a career in the entertainment industry. When I first moved to LA and would get an audition, my parents would put it on their calendar and immediately call me after to get the download. Auditioning is a big part of my life and it meant the world for them to call/text right after. They’ve been there for every win and always celebrated them with me, no matter how big or small (my siblings included, all 7!). My person has been the most impactful support system in my life up until this point. To be able to take everything to your partner – the highs/lows, your ideas, your dreams, the things you’re working towards, and the growing pains along the way – it’s been transformative. Although getting comfortable with being seen and heard has been a transition for me (as I believe it is for many people who are on their journey to find their person), it’s been so powerful.
