We had the good fortune of connecting with Rory D’Lasnow and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rory, how do you think about risk?
Risk taking is so important. My musical journey has been somewhat circuitous because so much of it was hindered by self-doubt and procrastination. Pursuing a life in music is a risk in and of itself and so it’s easy to become overwhelmed with the logistics of it and stick to something safer. But once I really committed to pursuing what I love with reckless abandon, I found an entire community of artists and music lovers that embraced and inspired me. Sometimes it feels easier to only take precisely measured steps, but the best thing I ever did was just jump in and not look back.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’d say the thing I’m most excited about is just truly connecting with other people over songs. There are so many awesome, visceral qualities to making and listening to music – just a good guitar riff or a vocal harmony – but nothing tops that shared experience between the artist and the listener. That’s what really matters most to me.

It wasn’t easy to get to where I am now. Success is so subjective and it often feels like there’s a constantly moving goal post, but I’m proud of what I’ve been able to accomplish and so grateful for what I’ve been able to experience.

Hopefully the end of the road isn’t in sight, but I feel so lucky to have been on this ride so far, As I mentioned in the earlier question – I think the greatest lesson I’ve learned is not to expect that I know what’s next. I spent years trying to anticipate what was around the corner and just held me back. My words of advice would just be – keep an open mind and an open heart and lead with sincerity. The rest will usually take care of itself.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Haha well I have the benefit of being right next to NYC, but I’d probably show them some of the more local spots around Jersey. I’d take them to Baumgart’s in Englewood – this wonderful restaurant in my hometown of Englewood, NJ. Then maybe to Bischoff’s – a legendary ice cream shop in Teaneck, the town where I currently live. I’d have to take them to Edgewater to see the Hudson and the city from our side of the river and then maybe if there’s time bring them down to Asbury to get a sense of all of the special things going on down there.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d just like to dedicate my shoutout to the NJ/NYC music scene. There are so many folks that helped me get out of my own way and into the world. Bookers who gave me the chance to play, fellow musicians who played with me or inspired me to get up there myself. The music community has been a huge difference maker in all facets of my life and it’s something I failed to fully anticipate in the years I spent sitting on my hands. I’ve been so blessed to have the chance to branch out from here, but this area is where it began for me.
