We had the good fortune of connecting with Hannah Coyoc and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Hannah, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
There are a few important factors to my success so far. I’ve had to allow myself to be vulnerable, confident in my work, and not be so hard on myself. It’s a learning experience that you can’t expect to be the best at when just starting out. There are plenty of gigs I’ve taken and have not loved my work, but I needed the practice and experience to get better. Don’t allow your fear of rejection or a bad gig define you. Just learn from your mistakes and keep going, because that’s the only way you’ll grow. At the very least I’ve met like minded creatives and have grown my network. Also TFP (time for print) has helped me a lot in feeling more confident in my work, practicing new makeup looks, and getting the practice to work on all different skin types. I’ve met a lot of great photographers, models, and stylists who have brought me onto paid gigs or have recommended me for other projects. It’s a great way to start out, because everyone is still learning. It’s not as much pressure, because I feel more people are understanding plus you’re doing your services for free. I actually got my first feature as makeup and hair department head because of TFP photos I’ve had on my website.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?

At the moment I am most proud of my first feature. I was department head for makeup and hair. Not only because of it being my first feature film, but the experience of shooting in remote locations. We were shooting a western over 16 days in the desert mostly. The conditions were brutal on everyone; just with the long drives to and from set and working in the heat, but it was a small crew and cast so we were all in it together and I’m excited to see the final outcome! It taught me a lot about what to expect when working outside in extreme heat and how that affects makeup and hair. Some days we’d need to hike 20 mins to where we were shooting. I would have to pack my makeup bags light enough to hike with but make sure I had everything I could possibly need or it would take me almost an hour to get there and back to set from my car. It also taught me how many casts I could realistically do makeup for in a certain time frame. It was a low budget film so I was the only makeup artist. Towards the end I would come early before the rest of the crew to get some of the female actors’ makeup done, just so the rest of the crew/cast wouldn’t be waiting on me to finish the rest of the cast.

I also recently did makeup for six male models for a Dazed magazine shoot with A$AP Rocky. It was for a Gucci and Adidas collaboration. It’s their newest issue on stands now. That was really cool! Ultimately however, I’d still say I’m most proud of the western feature because of all the blood, sweat, and tears that went into this and the amazing cast and crew who made it happen.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I haven’t been going out much these days, but if I do its usually around where I live. Theres a lot of great museums in arts district and my favorite coffee spot is also there called Boxx Coffee. One of my favorite restaurants right now is Homage Brewing. They have the best food and is in walking distance. Nick’s Cafe is also right down the street from them and their breakfast is always good. My best friend from NYC comes to visit frequently, and we always get Nicks, almost every morning. I also enjoy hiking with my dog at Griffith Park. There are different trails that are harder/ longer than others for you to choose from. You can see dtla and the Hollywood sign depending on which trail you take.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout series to my parents for supporting me through my journey; Sheila Mia Seifi, my mentor and friend who always believes in me; and Make-up Designory and Rob Burman for giving me the knowledge and guidance to get here.
