We had the good fortune of connecting with Emil Lundmark and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emil, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Drawing has always been my favorite thing to do. There’s something so fulfilling about being able to tell stories without using words. Even as children, before we learn to read and write, we can communicate through images. Art truly is a universal language. I chose to pursue a career in animation because I love to tell stories, and I love being able to connect to a large audience through my work. Sometimes there are thoughts and emotions a character can express in a drawing that can’t be said with words, and yet people feel your intentions and connect with your work. After experiencing the effect art can have on a person, I knew that I would be drawing for the rest of my life.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve had a deep appreciation for hand drawn animation from a young age, ever since I started watching animated films. I fell in love with how the characters could seem “more alive” than real life! In 2018 I attended my first classes on animation at Otis’s Summer of Art program. Looking back on the work I did, I knew I still had much to learn, but the experience gave me the tools I needed to develop my skills outside of the classroom. After building my portfolio and going through the whole application process, I was accepted to the Animation track at Art Center College of Design in 2019 and began my studies there that Fall. At first it was a huge adjustment, getting used to the work load and level of professionalism expected of us. I had to quickly learn how to manage my time, but once I grew accustomed to the lifestyle I came to appreciate everything I was able to learn. Working together in teams with other incredible artists, we’ve now finished two animated shorts with a third film currently in production. I couldn’t be more grateful to learn the pipeline of animation and become comfortable working with my peers in preparation for the animation industry. Now, as an incoming senior, I can’t wait to take my work to the professional stage and kick-off my career in animation.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One of my favorite places to take out-of-towners is the Original Farmer’s Market at the Grove. It’s a great place to try out a bunch of cool food and browse shops! There’s also the Pasadena Flea market at the Rose Bowl every second Sunday of the month, it’s a great place for thrift shopping. I’d also check out Honolulu Avenue in Montrose for cute restaurants, book stores, and music shops!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My parents have always been there to support me on my way to becoming a professional artist. They were the ones who first introduced me to the convention scene, encouraging me to exhibit and sell my artwork. I started selling my art when I was fourteen, and with the help of my parents learned how to handle myself in a professional setting. From answering emails to accounting, they’ve been there for me every step of the way. Even outside of the professional realm, they’ve always been enthusiastic about sharing their passions with me. While watching movies together my dad would point out certain camera angles and story-telling tactics that helped me learn more about the medium. In my spare time I would love making my own little movies, sometimes live action, sometimes stop-motion, and sometimes hand drawn animation. Having my parents support in my work helped me realize that my future career could bring me as much joy as my hobbies did.
