Meet Shami Sosa | Multidisciplinary Producer & Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Shami Sosa and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shami, why did you pursue a creative career?
As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to live my life in the arts. I pursued art in the same way I yearned for acceptance as a first-generation Asian American. Culturally and emotionally, I witnessed music as a powerful platform that brought people together. My pursuit has always been about communication, never clout. Finding a way to say things I never could with words. After years of dedication and doubt, I found myself fully immersed in my craft. Not for acceptance nor to impress, I finally began to produce my art without limits.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a multidisciplinary producer and mixed-media artist, I have my hands in multiple mediums. Music, street art, and photography, are chambers for my thoughts. What sets me apart from others is my ability to maximize branding to portray my individual story. From music production to album cover art, my personality and soul are poured into my creations. I recall countless nights questioning myself, pondering life choices, and with little support from my family, it was difficult to constantly put myself out there. Playing for empty rooms, releasing music on deaf ears, and producing a documentary no one would watch; every failure shaped me in becoming who I am today. But failure is growth. Persistence is and always will be the cheat code to success. Although I am nowhere near where I strive to be, I fall in love with the journey everyday. Learning more about myself and the human condition, my brand is about self-identity and growth. I’ve always tried to question to my inner-child and ask, what they would think? Would they approve? In a world jaded into thinking we are incapable of change, I want to empower others to realize their true potential. I am proud of my growing catalog in the music, film, and television production space. Recently, I’ve recently released my 7th album entitled “What About Gasper Gomez?” on all streaming services and am producing a travel series which airs on CBS this fall.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Chicago is known for its culture and cuisine. Deep-dish pizza and a Chicago style hotdog are must haves when visiting the city. Little Joe’s in Countryside has the best Italian Beef I’ve ever had, even the giardiniera is homemade. During the day we’d check in at Chicago’s coolest plant shop Adams & Son & Daughter Gardens in Humboldt Park for some fresh air. At night we’d check out a live jazz show Uptown at Green Mill (a popular hang out of Al Capone’s back in the day) and have some midnight snacks and refreshments at the newly opened Nine Bar in Chinatown.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give thanks to Fort Knox Studios and 2112 Inc. in Chicago, for being an incubator focused on the development of entrepreneurs in the creative industries. As a producer, community and networking is vital to generate opportunities and growth. I also want to thank my loving wife for supporting me in my artistic endeavors.
