We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura E Conley and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Laura E, is there something you believe many others might not?
That you shouldn’t weigh yourself. The only reason this advice is out there is because as an entire culture we have allowed ourselves to make the scale mean more that it does. We have allowed the number on the scale to measure our worth, our value and our good-enough-ness. The fact is the scale actually can’t measure our worth. And when we let it, we are literally handing over our own authority, we are handing over our own opinion of ourselves, we are allowing a device to tell us who we are and how good we are. I call bull shit!

I encourage my clients to weigh themselves. Not only to see the number but more importantly to see their thoughts about the number. When they can see their thoughts they will see their own subconscious opinions they have about themselves. When thoughts go unseen or unchecked they can create unwanted results in our lives. Thoughts are optional. Don’t believe everything you think, right? This is an opportunity to see what you do think about yourself AND change your thoughts if you notice some unuseful or unintentional thoughts arise to the surface! Think of it like Marie- Kondoing your brain. You have to actually see what is in the back of the junk drawer in order to clean it up. The scale is a perfect mirror into what you think about yourself to you can decide if you want to keep these thoughts or give them to goodwill and think new, better thoughts.

Also! If you want to lose weight, weighing yourself is actually a pretty good measure of whether or not what you are doing is working over time. It is better than they jeans, better than a tape measure, but it gets a bad rap. It is not perfect but it will measure your progress!

Can you imagine freaking out about the nurse taking your blood pressure the way you might freak out about her taking your weight? NO! Of course not! Simply because you have not been trained to attach your blood pressure to your worth. And if you were trying to improve your blood pressure levels, it would be helpful to measure your blood pressure on your hypertension journey!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I help moms lose weight for the last damn time! There are so many women that are trapped by diet culture. It is my mission to FREE THE MOMS so they can be the mom they want, finally write the book that is inside them and just be present and play with their kids!

Starting this business was NOT EASY and I feel like I HAD to do it! It is one of my callings in this one precious life. I left a successful career in corporate america to pursue my dream of coaching because I couldn’t NOT even though the odds were stacked against me. I was the breadwinner for my family when I left corporate so it was terrifying to leave my “safe and secure” job to pursue my dreams. My brain offered me a lot of what if you can’t do it? What if you fail? What if you suck? But I held the belief that as long as I didn’t quit I couldn’t fail.

I want the world to know that it is okay to WANT to lose weight. That losing weight does NOT mean that you don’t love your body and in fact if you DO have a desire to lose weight and you are ignoring that desire THAT is you not love yourself and your desires. When we decide that we can want to lose weight and take the leap of faith to do it for the last time, we free ourselves. We open up all the mental energy and space to be the person we want, have fun living life and contribute to our world in meaningful ways.

5 years ago, right after I had my daughter, I was standing naked after getting out the shower. My brain started attacking me for not “bouncing back quick enough”. My brain was berating me yt again for how my body looked and how I was gross and what was I going to do THIS time to lose the weight.

Something strong came over me in that moment. I realized that if I kept letting my brain do this to me, I would pass down this same negative self talk to my daughter. OVER MY DEAD BODY. I made a vow in that moment to heal my relationship with my body, the way it looks and food, once and for all. For me and for her.

It still blows my mind that I did. I cracked the code. I lost weight for the last time, freed myself from food forever AND I truly love my body and being with mySelf.

This one thing that I thought there was no code to, there is, I found it, it is now my life’s purpose to teach every mom to do the same. To be FREE once and for all from the handcuffs of diet culture and yo-yo-ing.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
