We had the good fortune of connecting with Johanna Ansnick and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Johanna, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When I decided to start Lady Universe, I wanted to share the discoveries I have made with organic pure oils and herbs. Skincare is such a personal, delicate subject, but if I could share my story involving my skin issues and what has helped me, it could spark a conversation or curiosity with someone else. I discovered a holistic skincare solution to my skin issues, and I hope others who try my products can also find that relief and confidence to love their skin again.

What should our readers know about your business?
Starting Lady Universe has its ups and downs, just like any business. But selling skincare is tough. People need to trust you and believe in your products. The first thing I did before I started my business was to get certified in holistic and organic skincare. With that knowledge and educational background, I was able to formulate products that are safe to use. Having a safe product to put on your skin is the most important thing to me because everything we put on our skin goes deep down to our bloodstream. Next is educating my audience and showing them an alternative way to care of their skin. I do this by making videos and posting about my products on social media. Posting has been a challenge for me. Not only do I run and make my products, but I also work as a camera operator in the film/tv world. My time is limited, and I have to be diligent not to overwork myself. My passion for both the film/tv and my business is what fuels me to keep going. When I share my products with an actor or co-worker and they notice a difference in their skin and they have healed from what ever skin issue they were battling, that is golden to me, that is why I work so hard. Building a skincare line isn’t easy, but if you are passionate about your products and you are willing to wait it out, good things will come! Don’t give up because it’s hard, keep climbing that mountain.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The best thing about living in Los Angeles, is all the amazing restaurants and activities you can do! If I had a friend coming over for the week, we would start out with brunch at République, then head over to Pasadena and look around my favorite book shop, Vroman’s. Get a nice cold tea at Jin and walk around the Huntington Library. And we would end the day at Urth Cafe. The next day we would eat a light breakfast at Lou the French on the block and spend the day in little Tokyo, eating yummy ramen and looking at all the shops! And end out day at Wi spa!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wouldn’t have the courage to start my business with my husband, Andrew Ansnick, my mom Monica Cerati and my best friend Emily Ray.

Their support, love and guidance is why I keep pushing everyday to keep this dream alive.
