We had the good fortune of connecting with Veronica Powers and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Veronica, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I started acting professionally when I was just seven years old. The first thing I knew is that: I wanted to be an artist.
Most kids wanted to play sports, I had absolutely no interest in that! I would be glued to my family’s television watching the movie Annie over and over again, and waiting for Disney Channel to air Hannah Montana episodes. I was obsessed, and knew that I wanted to be like the talented young girls I watched in entertainment.
My elementary school hosted a talent show for upper-grade students. At only six years old, I convinced my teachers that I must be a part of it, a request a kindergartener had never made. Barely over three feet, I confidently performed on a stage and belted out a song from Annie and received a standing ovation.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Was it easy? No… but when you are so passionate about the arts, nothing can stop you. How did I overcome my challenges? I believe everything is a lesson! I have learned pearls of wisdom from every challenging role I have taken on. I also believe God’s timing is always right. As well as consistent practice and studying-honing your craft! One must be grateful for every opportunity.
I am proud to say that I won Best Young Actress in the category of Voice-Over Performance this past weekend at the Young Entertainer Awards for my dubbing work. I honestly did not expect to win, and I think that is key to life. I also have not expected to book many of the live-action dubbing roles I have. This reminds me of a video Betty Mae Casting shared of Robert De Niro giving advice to actors. He said “just assume you’re not going to get the part, and that’ll free you if anything, it’ll free you to make a bolder choice maybe… it’s more important than even the director watching you do the reading-it’s the casting director because they work with directors all the time so if they see you do something that’s kind of interesting and bold they’ll tell the director of another project they’re working on, well maybe you know, this actor isn’t quite what you’re looking for but they’re interesting and maybe you should meet them, and you never know what happens…” (Instagram). This is applicable to anyone in any field to take chances, make bold choices, and never expect anything. What is crucial is to be your unique self, not just be like everyone else!
I just wrapped up my 8th live-action Dubbing project for Netflix, while balancing a full course-load at the University of Southern California! I will be graduating with a degree in Theatre from the School of Dramatic Arts this Spring of 2023!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Ah! This is a great question and hard to answer! Hmmm my favorite spots in the city are Century City mall, Musso & Frank Grill, the Fox Theatre in Westwood, obviously Malibu, and driving on Mulholland Drive at night to see the city lights! I’m sure I’ll think of more later… I love posting good spots in LA on my Instagram story!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to thank all the teachers I have learned from that have believed in my ability, fellow classmates, and my parents for letting me choose my own path and of course for believing in me.
