Meet Annie Howell | Mixed Media Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Annie Howell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Annie, what do you attribute your success to?
I think for any creative entrepreneur to be successful, you must first and foremost create from your heart. The magic really happens when you follow what inspires you- what lights your soul on fire. Beautiful artwork comes from within and when you create from that spark, it’s a powerful result.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I went to the University of Tennessee where I got a degree in advertising. After I graduated in 2005, I moved back to my hometown of Greenville, South Carolina where I worked in the agency world and then corporate marketing for a combined career of nearly fifteen years. I practiced painting as a hobby and took on commissions for friends and family. I left the corporate world in 2017 when I had my first daughter and began exploring art a little more. And finally in 2020, I took my art career full time. I have been so blessed to pursue this accidental artist dream while raising my two girls. I have thoroughly enjoyed finding my style and refining my craft.
My work is very bold and colorful. I use mostly acrylic paint and often mix in metal leaf, pencil, and oil pastel details. I am inspired by both God’s handiwork- namely coastal landscapes like marshes, the ocean, sunrises, and sunsets- as well as the abstract shapes of man-made architecture (bridges and buildings). My creative vision is not to interpret nature realistically as we see it but rather offer nature as I feel it. Through bold colors and rich texture, my goal is to transport you to a place of peace and wonderment so that together, we can appreciate the beauty of the earth.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, being an enneagram 7, I love adventure! I love to travel and explore so there would be lots of exploring outside whether it be in nature or getting lost in the city. Then I’d love to find an outdoor patio or somewhere with a view, maybe some live music, eat some delicious food and have a fun cocktail or glass of wine.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people who have supported me throughout my artistic journey- my husband and kids, friends, family, collectors, designers, gallery-owners and so many more. I’ve listened to many podcasts and read books about being a thriving professional artist and some have been extremely helpful and inspiring!
But the ultimate one who deserves recognition is The Man Upstairs- the ultimate Creator and Artist. Not only did He create the beauty of the earth and heavens that inpsires the majority of my work, but he blessed me with the talent to create. I’m forever thankful for that.
