We had the good fortune of connecting with Steve Deering and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Steve, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
There wasn’t any conscious thought process behind starting my own business, if my efforts can even be called that. But I suppose any writer or artist is a brand of their own, and thus, a business of their own. I was just plugging away, working on my own career as a writer and filmmaker. Eventually, my efforts snowballed a bit, and others got caught up in my work and my goals. Now, the efforts have blossomed into a full team that is bonded and dedicated to creating short films, music videos, feature films, and more. The business shaped on its own over time through people coming together and deciding to team up in order to support one another and create.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a producer and in my day job position as a writing mentor, I work with all kinds of stories and projects. I’ve helped usher along heavy dramas, science fiction, faith-based films, musicals, romantic comedies, and everything in between. Personally, I find myself drawn to the horror comedy genre, and many of my current projects I’m pushing forward can be categorized as such. I love the fantasy of the genre and the empowerment of allowing people to laugh at the taboo darkness that exists within our world. Laughing at something that could be frightening gives people a sense of power over it, and I think that’s a very healthy and important thing. It took about ten years of operating within this genre, working with my close friends and collaborators as we did a variety of projects within this vibe. Budget has always been a huge obstacle for us, but I’d like to think that our resourcefulness has always tuned our restrictions towards opportunities for creativity. Now, with all our experience under our belt, my team, Gargoyle Media, is creating our first feature length film, a horror comedy called “Aria-Remix.” And we can’t wait to show it to the world.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m a bit of an introvert, but I can’t resist a good board game night with close friends. If my friends were visiting, I would take them down into the Orange County area and show them a little place called Requiem: Coffee, Tea, & Fantasy. It’s a fantasy and science fiction themed coffee and tea house that makes for an excellent headquarters for gatherings and game nights. I would also take them north of Los Angeles into my favorite restful spot, Green Valley Lake. This is a common vacation site for me as well as a frequently used filming area for my team. Of course, with the right company, I wouldn’t say no to a visit to the beach, a good concert, or perhaps a challenging escape room.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I definitely could not have achieved anything in my life without the support of my friends and family around me. I have many consistent and reliable collaborators. Matthew Rodriguez, Clarence Williams, Joaquin Silva, Lauren Buxton, Olivia Brown, Vanessa Evans, Laura Aitken, and Val Hurtado, just to name a few. Each of them has brought their talents and skills to our collective table time and time again, supporting not just me but one another as we create a body of work together, hone our crafts, and find our paths in life together. I could also extend a special thanks to the late, great producer Robert Evans, who served as my very first mentor. Through a stroke of what must have been pure luck, I landed an internship under this legendary figure about a decade ago, and he put me on my current path of development and producing that I remain on to this day.
