We had the good fortune of connecting with Amy Wang and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Amy, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
Most people outside of Hollywood, imagine Hollywood to be a place of glitz and glamor. It is both those things but more than anything, it is a place of business and intense competition. People always underestimate the idea that you need tough skin in this business. Tough skin means something different here because you are creating something personal everyday in your job and being judged on that. In most industries, tough skin is a necessity. However, it is always easy to separate the work from your identity. Here in Hollywood, everything that gets rejected is intertwined with your personality and sense of self so it can be a particularly tough pill to swallow. In saying that, when something you create is seen and praised by your peers and audience members, it can be the best feeling in the world. And that is why so many people, daily, come to LA to pursue their dreams. Because there is no better feeling to do what you love and share your vision with the world.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
It was definitely not an easy path to where I am today. It took years of hard work, dedication, learning, adapting and determination to get here! Straight out of film school, I worked a full time job while I continued to write for about a year before landing a script on The Black List and getting agents. After that, I thought it would be a smooth ride to the top but it’s been nothing but detours and u-turns. Projects take longer to go into production than you realize, projects fall through under various circumstances and you lose jobs. But it’s all an exciting and worthwhile pursuit because ultimately, you’re creating content for the next generation of humanity.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The great thing about LA is that each county or pocket is so unique and different from the other areas. I think a hike up to the observatory is always great because they are able to look out at the city from a high vantage point as well as check out the observatory! Downtown is always great to explore too and some of the most unique restaurants are popping up there. Venice and Santa Monica are great too.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’ve love to give a shoutout to my partner – Nathan. He’s been my number one support system since day one and has always believed in my dreams.
