We had the good fortune of connecting with Abiodun Koya and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Abiodun, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking

My philosophy is that if you’re passionate enough about your art, you will take risks. Looking at the way I know I am wired, I am a bona fide risk taker and I can confidently say that I love taking risks. I am way too much of a curious artist because I like to see and experience what lies on the other site of risk. When I look back at some of the decisions and steps I have taken so far for my career, I am indeed happy that I took risks, because honestly, they have formed production brands that have come to stay.

I am also reaping joyously from the fruits of those risks till today, and will, even for many many years to come. A big lesson that risk-taking has taught me, and that I’m grateful for is that it formed the character of courage and bravery in me.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

Ive always loved thinking outside the box and the love of giving my audiences a unique and memorable experience through my art are part of what sets me apart. Lately, Ive veered into thinking and looking at things with the head turned upside down. You get to view things from the shoe soles’ vantage point, and that’s rare.

They were many challenges on the way, part of which was being a woman of color in this chosen genre and hailing from a continent whose culture is not necessarily famous for the genre. Being willing to be adaptive, fluid, focused and listening to my intuition aided me in getting to where I am today.

I also learned that being courageous and following one’s heart and passion are necessary tools needed to carve one’s niche and path to success. Anything less than, is a guaranteed life of misery, frustration and zero fulfillment. One is like a drifting ship on the sea without a Captain.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

I’d like to give the biggest shout out to my dad for introducing music to me at a very young age. Another major shout out to my nonagenarian music mentor; Muriel Hom who saw my talent, introduced me to an amazing vocal coach. I trained with this VC for 15 years and it was the best thing that ever happened to my voice!
