Meet Jim Morrison | Writer/Director

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jim Morrison and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jim, how do you think about risk?
I once cut a giant hole in the back of my home. I also bought an expensive video camera that I could barely afford at the time.
Okay, about the hole. With some construction experience, and youtube tutorials, I cut an opening in order to install a set of doors and stairs that leads out to the backyard. The work turned out to be sturdy, and up to code. And still holds up to this day.
With the camera, I made a few films that played at film festivals and got some decent attention. The camera is sort of obsolete now, but the films aren’t. And the festival experience is something I will always remember.
You could say these were risks I took. But in order to think and act on a larger scale, these risks were necessary. And have paid off in the long run. Be cautious, but don’t be afraid to take risks.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a writer/director I find my stories all come from a very personal place. I tend to write about past and present aspects of my life. Ranging from simple things I find funny to tough life events that may be difficult to talk about. I found the writing flows better when it comes from a place of actual life experience. A place where you are honest with yourself. No matter what, write it down. Even if it’s something you would rather not share. You can always decide later if you will use it . Which I end up doing anyways.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I enjoy sharing my world of things that I enjoy with others. I live in a seaside town and grew up fishing and digging for clams, oysters and mussels. This was actually my first job as a kid. To this day I found that I still enjoy doing it at my leisure. Occasionally I have taken visiting friends on kayak trips to a few of my secret clamming spots. I have taught them how to dig for clams. But also to respect the law of the bay. Don’t take any that are under size. And not to dig in areas that are off limits.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am inspired by my peers. People who are out doing something. Actors, writers, musicians, etc. It doesn’t have to be specifically what I do. I love to be among creative people. Listen to their ideas and even discuss my own. I feel it’s important to do both. Of course as a film guy we do love to talk about our projects. But you have to listen to others as well. Know when to take good advice and to leave bad. Graciously accept praise, but also listen to criticisms. Be inspired by each other.
