Meet shyna king | Lash artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with shyna king and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi shyna, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Over the years, I navigated through various career paths and changed majors in college multiple times, searching for fulfillment. It wasn’t until I enrolled in beauty school in 2015 that I found true happiness. Despite the school closing down four months before completion, I persevered, exploring job opportunities while still practicing beauty services on the side. Though I found a decent-paying job, uncertainty lingered. Eventually, I pursued a course in lash extensions, and it ignited a passion in me. In 2021, I attended esthetician school, and upon graduation, I secured my license.
Initially working from my parents’ house, I honed my skills and quickly built a clientele. Despite the challenges of relocating to a new city, I started my studio in my apartment, facing initial skepticism. Undeterred, I attracted more clients, proving my dedication. With time, I upgraded to my own studio, and clients flowed in consistently. The joy of making someone feel beautiful solidified my passion, confirming that becoming a lash artist is my true calling. I’ve not only found my career path but also discovered a boundless enthusiasm that keeps me excited about my journey as a lash artist.

Becoming a lash artist proved challenging for someone like me, lacking patience initially. The learning curve was steep, taking me five hours to complete a full set at the start. Attracting clients was tough due to the lengthy process, but dedication to perfecting my technique through daily practice paid off. Over time, I honed my skills, reducing the time for a full set to 1 hour and 15 mins to 2 hours. Generating clients was initially daunting, especially with social anxiety, but overcoming fears led me to establish my own studio after starting in my apartment. This move not only provided a more professional setting but also reassured clients, making them feel safer and more comfortable.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’d love to explore multiple cities with my bestie. Starting with the thrill of Six Flags, followed by a stroll along the beach—Santa Monica or Long Beach for a walk, and Dockweiler for a dip in the water. For dinner, one of my top choices in DTLA is Kai’s Table; the food is fantastic, and the vibe is worth experiencing. Switching to a different vibe for brunch, Blaqhause in North Hollywood is a must – the food is simply chef’s kiss. “As an LA girl at heart, I love planning around the vibrancy of the big city. Whether it’s exploring museums, catching the latest movies, or simply strolling around local shops and charming restaurants, I thrive in the dynamic energy that Los Angeles has to offer. Let’s craft plans that capture the essence of this city’s diverse and exciting experiences.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My big sister, Shandilin King, has been a profound inspiration in shaping many of my life choices. Her unwavering belief in me, even when others might doubt, is my constant motivation. Following her footsteps in the beauty industry, she’s the driving force behind my pursuit of what I want. Together, we’re diligently working towards our dream of establishing a full salon—a one-stop-shop that embodies our passion and dedication in the beauty world.
