We had the good fortune of connecting with Shipra Mathur and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shipra, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
It was a lifelong dream to launch my own business. Its deeply rooted in my upbringing. My fascination with fashion and style was ignited when I observed my mother’s passion for teaching fashion design. The desire to establish a brand reflecting my love for sustainability and quality has been a driving force.

After spending two decades in Marketing and PR, the oportunity to embark on this entrepreneurial journey presented itself when I relocated to the Bay area. Stars aligned the moment I connected with my co-founder Nupur Singh, who not only shared my values but also helped me envision making a positive impact on the world. Our collaboration gave birth to Monday Chill—a brand that we wholeheartedly cherish. Our joint decision led us to curate a luxurious bamboo clothing line that resonates with the ideals we both hold dear.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The journey of Monday Chill started over a cozy coffee! My co-founder and I started discussing how we need a clothing line that is comfortable yet stylish and also feels excellent on sensitive skin. We landed on a bamboo collection which isn’t just about feeling good, but also about doing good. Fully biodegradable, with low water needs and fast growth, it keeps our planet in check. Beyond being eco-friendly, bamboo is hypoallergenic, breathable, and crazy soft – making your day easy, no matter what’s on your plate. We searched extensively for eco-friendly suppliers and then iterated persistently to create premium pieces because doing good should look good too. We pride ourselves in not just making the best product in the market but also creating an affordable option for luxury materials. Being women-owned we also understand the need for an ethical and equal-opportunity workplace which are our core values at Monday Chill.
As with any new company, a challenge we face is spreading awareness… and then how to scale it to make it available at the same impeccable quality to the vast majority of people who we know love and want it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love this question! The San Francisco Bay Area is such a vibrant place, so diverse, it has something for everyone! Here is a week-long itinerary for someone visiting the Bay Area for the first time: Have coffee and breakfast at Laquat on Geary Street. Go walk up to Land’s end, the views from there are breathtaking. A liesurely lunch at Sausalito, then a slow hike up to Hawk Hill for more spectacular views and pictures. Back in the city for some dinner at Kokkari.
For the next two days I would recommend a trip to Carmel by the Sea. Tons of hiking, many good spots for lunch, and my favorite bakery – Carmel Bakery. Drive down to Big Sur for some more unforgettable views of the Pacific Ocean, the historical Bixby Bridge and lunch at Sierra Mar.
Can’t miss the famous Napa Valley if you’re a wine lover – a couple of days of amazing wine tastings and tours.
Definitely squeeze in a day trip to Mendocino with pristine nature drives and my favorite winery – The Novarro Winery.
There are just so many more amazing places and things to do 1 week may not be enough

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

I truly believe in the power of community, and the saying “it takes a village” resonates not only in family life but also in the world of business. My spouse, a dedicated feminist, has been an unwavering supporter, taking on the responsibility of sustaining our family while I transitioned from a comfortable 9-5 job to embark on the entrepreneurial path.

I also want to express my heartfelt gratitude to my incredible co-founder, Nupur Singh. Her rock solid partnership motivates me take on the toughest challenges and her collaborative style is truly inspirational. With her, I can give my absolute best every day, and feel like we’re creating something to be proud of all our lives.
