We had the good fortune of connecting with Cory Tyndall and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cory, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
For me success was always built upon authenticity. From the moment I started doing music I knew that I want to be authentically myself and that I wasn’t going to let anyone tell me what I need to do to be successful. Sometimes I do feel that has hindered me but in the long run it’s helped me create a successful brand with authentic fans who support me no matter what. I think to create any career for brands it needs to be authentic if everything as a facade or a character eventually the truth will show through.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am an out and proud gay rapper. When I started writing music, I wanted to write about the issues that faced our community along with make music for our community. A lot of people thought that I should make more mainstream sounds and lyrics because being gay in the rap community isn’t always a good thing, in fact it’s hardly ever a good thing. I think what sets me apart from everyone else is that I started my career out and I will always be out, a lot of our mainstream gay artists start as either straight or closeted. And this isn’t to attack anyone it’s just an observation. Getting to where I am today has not been easy, but I can say I did it authentically and without apology, I made a lot of mistakes both musically visually, and honestly investing in the wrong management and the wrong creative teams at times. I think the biggest takeaway in the seven years I’ve been making music is that you need to trust your instincts and make sure you have trustworthy and good people around you at all times, keep your circle tight and make sure you only have people around you that you trust.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Let me start by saying I am an awful tour guide of Los Angeles I lived here for 10 years, and I still suck at it! I would say some of my favorite restaurants in Los Angeles that I love to take my friends too definitely Scopa Italian Roots in Venice, the food is always great, and I know the service will be great as well the chef there really knows what she’s doing. I also love Little Fatty and Mar Vista and Sausal in El Segundo. If they wanted to stay in Los Angeles the entire time and it was their first time here, I would definitely want to do the classics like the Hollywood sign as well as the walk of Fame and the Chinese theater. We would definitely have a West Hollywood night where I would take them to a tourist on my favorite bars including Beaches, The Abbey and Mickey’s. I also really enjoy living near the water so it would definitely have a beach day maybe take a day trip down to San Diego and go to Blacks Beach. If they didn’t want to go to San Diego, we would go up to Malibu spend a day in the sun and then have a nice dinner at Elefante in Santa Monica. I would also want to show them the studio where I create all of my musical endeavors.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Honestly I have a lot of my success and encouragement from the close group of friends I accumulated while in Los Angeles over the last 10 years. My friend Chelsea styled me when I had no money to my name. My friend Steven who shot my first few videos not asking for a single dollar he also edited them all. My partner at the time Wayne who pushed me out of my comfort zone and forced me to become a better artist. Noelle who would sit with me in the car and listen to every mix of every song and give feedback over a glass of wine. And I have to shout out my new team Kat and Nick who have helped me with my latest creative endeavors working long hours and asking for little to nothing in return. Without these people I wouldn’t exist, Prettiboiroq wouldn’t exist.
