We had the good fortune of connecting with Jaquil Barnes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jaquil, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
Originally, I’m from Plainfield, New Jersey. My back ground was considerably rough. I’m the eldest boy of six siblings with two older sisters. I was raised by a single mother. Growing up it was tough. With limited resources we had to find other means to support our family. I wasn’t always the master chef. I’ve done things and had to go through things to get where I am today, but every obstacle has shaped me into the man I am.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I started off at a local bar. Passing out cards, networking, and making a name for myself. I remember before I even moved to California, I used to have big dreams. I would say “I’m going to move out there, and cook for the California’s elite.” It’s definitely been a journey, even with the ups and downs you have to always remember that you can do anything if you put your mind to it.

What sets me apart is, not actually being from California. I’m from New Jersey and the energy I bring while in the kitchen is unmatched.

I’m most proud of how far I’ve come.

Getting to where I am now was not easy. It took blood, sweat, lots of tears, stressful nights, a lot of praying and a lot of believing in myself.

I overcame by believing in myself, by not stopping, and by not giving up when it dark.

I’ve learned that you can’t take everybody with you and life is what you make it.

I want to motivate other people to chase their dreams just as I did and win.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
That’s funny because as a chef I know if my friends came to visit they would want me to cook at least three times while they’re here. Once that’s over I’d definitely take them to Tao and Steak 48 for top tier cuisine. I’d show them around. Hit Venice Beach and Hollywood. I’m not an itinerary type of guy because I’m lit in real life.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shoutout The People. Anyone who has supported me. Purchased a meal, booked me for an event or catering services, pulled up or even mentioned my name or business in rooms that wasn’t even present in. It’s because of the people that I am able to serve and do what it is I love.
