We had the good fortune of connecting with Daniel Matep and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Daniel, why did you pursue a creative career?
From a young age, my fascination with movies ignited a deep passion within me for the world of storytelling and creativity. Movies weren’t just entertainment; they were portals to new worlds, avenues of escape during difficult times. The transformative power of film inspired me profoundly, stirring a desire to evoke similar emotions and experiences in others. I chose an artistic career because I believe in the ability of storytelling to connect, uplift, and inspire, and I hope to craft narratives that resonate with audiences on a deeply personal level, just as movies did for me.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m deeply passionate about creating and producing films that resonate with audiences on a profound level. What sets me apart is not just my technical skills but also my journey and the unique perspective I bring to storytelling. My journey began with programs like Inner City Filmmakers, where I was introduced to the art of filmmaking and given the tools to bring my ideas to life. From my very first short film experience in a movie theater to filming weddings and beyond, each opportunity has shaped me both personally and professionally.

Starting with a Canon GL2, a camera that represented my humble beginnings, I embraced every opportunity it brought my way. While the path hasn’t always been easy, facing challenges head-on has been instrumental in my growth. Whether it was financial constraints or creative obstacles, I learned to adapt, persevere, and find creative solutions.

Through it all, I’ve learned the importance of resilience, passion, and staying true to my vision. Every setback has been a lesson, every success a milestone. My story is one of determination, hard work, and the belief that with passion and dedication, anything is possible.

What I want the world to know is that my journey is not just about filmmaking; it’s about resilience, community, and the power of pursuing your dreams against all odds. My brand is built on authenticity, creativity, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. I want to inspire others to follow their passions, no matter where they come from or what obstacles they face. My story is proof that with determination and belief in oneself, anything is achievable.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

For a week-long trip showing my best friend around, I’d start with a visit to Amoeba Music in Hollywood. It’s a treasure trove for music and movie enthusiasts, offering an extensive collection spanning various genres and eras. We’d spend hours browsing through vinyl records, CDs, and of course, the vast selection of movies. After indulging our passion for music and film, we’d head to a nearby theater to catch a movie, perhaps one of our favorites or something new and exciting.

To refuel after our cinematic experience, we’d grab lunch at a cozy spot in the area, maybe a local diner or a trendy cafe where we can discuss the film and our shared love for movies. In the evenings, we’d explore the vibrant nightlife of Hollywood, checking out some live music venues or trendy bars for drinks and good conversation.

Throughout the week, I’d make sure to include visits to iconic landmarks like the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Griffith Observatory for stunning views of the city, and maybe even a hike in the Hollywood Hills for some outdoor adventure and breathtaking scenery.

We’d also explore the cultural side of Los Angeles, visiting museums like the Getty Center or the Los Angeles County Museum of Art to appreciate art and history. And of course, no trip to LA would be complete without some beach time, so we’d spend a day soaking up the sun and enjoying the laid-back vibes of Santa Monica or Venice Beach.

Overall, I’d aim to give my friend a well-rounded experience of LA, combining our shared interests in music and film with exploration of the city’s diverse culture, cuisine, and attractions.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’m incredibly grateful for the support and opportunities provided by the Neighborhood Youth Association. Their after-school program was not just a place to spend time; it was a nurturing environment where I discovered my passion for filmmaking. It was through their Documentary Filmmaking class that I found my creative voice and gained the skills to pursue my dreams. The guidance, encouragement, and resources they offered were instrumental in shaping my journey, and I owe a significant part of my success to them. So, a heartfelt shoutout to the Neighborhood Youth Association for believing in me and helping me realize my potential.
