Meet Liz Tenuto | The Workout Witch

We had the good fortune of connecting with Liz Tenuto and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Liz, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
Our mission is to heal the physical effects of trauma and long-term stress with somatic exercises. By providing the tools to release your trauma, regulate your nervous system, reconnect with your body, and reclaim your physical strength, we’re making somatic exercise programs easily accessible to every person regardless of geographical location or income level.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Somatic healing has historically been expensive and difficult to access. Through our social media following of over 3.5 million people across platforms, we’ve made somatic healing fun, accessible, approachable and effective for all people. I’m excited to share that I’m also currently in the process of writing a book with Harper Collins.
After teaching in person for 14 years, my mentor Augusta passed away. To process the grief, I started to post somatic exercises on Tiktok even though I had zero followers. The Workout Witch Tiktok account grew really quickly, and until then, I didn’t realize how many other people were struggling with the physical effects of stress and trauma. During the pandemic, I couldn’t teach in person anymore, so started offering online somatic exercise courses. My biggest challenge since launching the courses has been keeping up with the demand because the business and our social media accounts have grown really quickly.
I’m a survivor of narcissistic abuse and domestic violence. I deeply know and understand what it feels like when you feel broken, you don’t have the energy to get out of bed, you have so much brain fog that you can’t think clearly, you’re having panic attacks, or you feel stuck and overwhelmed every day. After healing myself from the debilitating side effects that stored trauma was wreaking on my 20 year old body, I’ve become committed to introducing somatic exercises to the world.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Let’s start with the classics! An obligatory trip to Erewhon, a beach walk in Malibu, and dinner reservations at Nobu Malibu. I’d then take them to West Hollywood–we’d do brunch at Laurel Hardware, dessert (with macaroons) at Bottega Louie, shopping on Melrose, and a drag show. We’d also have to do a picnic and hike at Will Rodgers State Park and a fried chicken sandwich for lunch at Interstellar in Santa Monica. AND! A trip to The Broad Museum.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate this shoutout to August Moore, my ballet teacher who first introduced me to somatics when I was 22. Augusta noticed that I was frequently dissociated and had difficulty with spatial orientation in her ballet class and suggested that I come to her somatics class.
