Meet Shuyi Li | Motion Graphic Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Shuyi Li and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shuyi, what do you attribute your success to?
I believe that having clear goals has been an important factor in my success so far. I have always had a vision for my career and have been aware of what I want for years. Throughout my career development, this has helped me a lot when facing challenges in my life. I’d say that having goals is important at every stage of my career. These goals have also changed over the years, but this has encouraged me to be successful

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Overall, my career trajectory may appear seamless from an outsider’s perspective. I’m currently engaged in projects that many people dream about. However, there have been numerous moments of self-doubt and decision struggles along the way.
Aside from the doubts I faced regarding my ability to pursue animation during my studies, I encountered similar uncertainties during my first job. Working within a team focused on a unique endeavor, and lacking experienced professionals, I often questioned whether I was on the right path. Nevertheless, I maintained faith in my abilities by approaching each project mindfully and striving to deliver the highest quality designs possible. I firmly believed that this dedication would ultimately influence the outcome.
During chaotic moments, I always remind myself of my goals and the desired results, which helps me navigate through challenges with clarity.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well, I think this depends on whether they are my Chinese best friends or my American best friends. If my Chinese friends visit me in New York, I will show them many of the places I usually go. New York is one of the best cities in the world, and I want to take them to all the art museums, galleries, and exhibitions. On the other hand, if my American friends travel to China, I will be very excited to show them my hometown, Beijing. In my opinion, it’s also the best city in the world. There are many famous spots in Beijing and, of course, the food. Fun fact: I keep telling my best friends how great Beijing is, and they are really planning to visit Beijing sometime next year.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to mention one of my professors from my graduate studies, Professor Michael O’Rourke. He is one of the wisest people I’ve ever known in my life. I learned a lot from him. Learning from him made me truly start to enjoy animation and storytelling. He also inspired me to see the world, society, and philosophy from a different perspective. Before, I was very afraid of creating work by myself because I didn’t believe in my ability. He inspired me to think of storytelling on a whole other level. After learning from him, I wasn’t afraid of creativity anymore.
