We had the good fortune of connecting with Brajohn Hicks and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brajohn, what do you want your legacy to be?
I want my legacy to be my self expression and how I’m comfortable in my skin. Kind of like what Beyoncé said “Comfortable in my skin, cozy with who I am.” I want people to know that it’s always okay to be you while practicing kindness. When you have a marginalized background, or have even faced years of being ostracized, you began to conform to someone that you’re not. You borderline lose yourself, and it’s very scary how fast it happens with minimal realization. Your identity and the groups you’re apart of, if you chose to accept it, has a lot of beauty to them and can be a pivotal moment for you.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
How did I get to where I am today, by taking risk and facing life straight on.
I started off in college at Cal State University, Los Angeles and received my bachelors degree in Communication and Marketing. I was then able to gain business experience in both the roles of being an Individual Contributor and People Leader. Was it easy? No. Hell no. Nothing comes easy. You need to work to get what you want or where you want to be. The lessons I learned along the way is to advocate, advocate, ADVOCATE in every way possible. Being humble is definitely the way to go, but make sure it doesn’t allow you to get overlooked. You need to constantly remind people your strengths, talents and capabilities. Always remember where you want to be and never forget where you came from.
What I’m excited about, impacting the lives of the people I see daily. Whether thats through a basic conversation, reminding them of their potential, or motivating them to continue to move forward even when it seems like there’s a dark tunnel with no light at the end of it. When you give kindness out, you receive it back.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I had someone visiting the city, It would be an active trip. I would take them to Santa Monica and Venice. I would start by taking them to Venice beach and going to one of the bars, specifically the Venice Whaler or the Water front. From there I would recommend they try Teddy’s Taco in Venice beach, this place has amazing Birria. Once done eating, I would take us to the infamous Santa Monica Pier so they can see how diverse the attraction is. Lastly, I will then take us to the 3rd street promenade for some shopping.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There’s a ton of people I want to shoutout and have love for. I will start with one group and thats my family, of course. To say the least, I love them. They continue to make me a better person day over day and I’m beyond grateful for them. They’ve reminded me there’s multiple aspects to life and be as well balanced as possible. Prioritize your health and live unapologetically as everyone isn’t able to.
Next is my friends, specifically the ones I’ve known for 6 years+. There are some recent ones that I have a lot of love for but the ones that been around for those years have been a huge part of me. They’ve continued to push me into new experiences I would’ve never thought I could see myself doing or even attempting to do. As they push my boundaries, I continue to push theirs through body positivity and being who they are, unapologetically.
