We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeffrey Nadal and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jeffrey, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The thought process behind starting my own business was a simple one: I wanted to live life on my terms with my wife. We were starting to plan to have a family & started realizing the reality of our situation. With the way things were going when I was a teacher & my wife being in health care administration, the money & the time did not seem realistic to achieve the life we desired. It was at this point we knew we had to make a change.
What should our readers know about your business?
I would like to talk about two businesses if possible, that being my dog training company & my financial services agency because they have both played a pivotal role in life we have created today. We started our dog training company because our dog Kobe inspired us & made us fall in love with the process of training & raising a dog. He also made us fall in love with the doberman breed which is why he became our trademarked logo for both businesses. For the first couple years of our dog training business, it was more of a job as I was the sole trainer building up the brand. It wasn’t until I got into the financial services space that I really learned HOW to run a true business. It was a this point where my mentor Otis Byrd had me read a book which helped me come to the realization I didn’t really have a business, I was just an employee within my own business. The moment I began to operate my dog training business the same way we operated our financial services business, that’s when things began to take off for us.
We got to where we are today by using both businesses to leverage each other. Believe it or not, most of my former dog training clients have become clients within our financial services company while others have even joined our firm & become financial professionals alongside us. Many of the dog trainers who I trained & hired were actually former dog training clients who simply fell in love with the process just like I did when I first got started.
Was it easy? Absolutely not. My wife & I worked harder than we ever had to ensure we grew something organically from scratch. We would drive to clients for $20 an hour sessions when we first started simply to film content & create a name for ourselves. We can’t say it’s surprising to see what the Alpha Mentality brand has grown to because this is exactly what we envisioned & talked about often. If you can see it in your mind, you can make it come true.
One of the main lessons I’ve learned along the way is you will never out earn your identity. My mentor Otis would always tell me the only way to increase our income was to become obsessed with personal development; so that’s exactly what I did.
What I want the world to know about the Alpha Mentality brand is it was inspired by Kobe Bryant’s Mamba Mentality. All Kobe ever preached was helping inspire others to be great at WHATEVER it is THEY want to do in life. When we thought of a name that would represent a similar philosophy, we came up with Alpha Mentality. Many people have different interpretations of what it means to be ”the alpha”. An alpha to me is a leader who is leads & guides the pack from the back, not always the front. It’s about helping others learn to lead & become the alpha they’re destined to become. We believe if we can help everyone else in our organization achieve THEIR goals & dreams, we will indirectly reach ours as well.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If anyone comes to visit, we’re definitely going to take them to a LAKERS game & specifically sit in the AMEX lounge to give them a real experience! In terms of food places, my wife & I keep it real simple so definitely some pizza & wings, mariscos, or maybe even take them to my parents Pupuseria in Cudahy! We’ve had some of our agents who are in Florida come down & one of the places we knew we had take them to visit was Irvine so they could meet our mentor Otis Byrd. He has a way of helping people see life in a different light.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The person I have to shoutout is my wife Elizabeth Nadal. Since day one, she has been the most supportive person I have ever met. This may be part of the reason why I proposed only 7 months into meeting her. I still remember the day I wanted to quit teaching on a sunny Sunday afternoon; she told me “go for it, we’ll figure it out”. I believe if a man can find a woman that supports & believes in him, he can accomplish anything. I want to provide my wife & my daughter with the life of their dreams because they are the reason I do everything in life. I can’t thank my wife enough for always supporting what I do & having my back.
