Meet Josie Kramer | MA, CHC, CYT, LMT, PhD Student in Integral Transpersonal Psychology

We had the good fortune of connecting with Josie Kramer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Josie, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
The idea for Vikara Center came from a blend of my personal and professional background and a powerful vision shared with my partner, Brian. As a PhD student in Psychology and a trained Transpersonal Guide, Somatic Practitioner, Yoga and Meditation Teacher, Health Coach, and Bodyworker, I draw on 16 years of experience supporting others on their healing journeys. During COVID, Brian and I met in Mexico, and through a transformative medicine experience, he envisioned creating a retreat center together.
We were fortunate to have contacts in the Cleveland National Forest area, where a friend owns a KOA campground along with adjacent private land. This gave us the perfect opportunity to bring our vision to life. We embarked on the journey of building Vikara Center—a yoga and wellness retreat center—and after only 90 days, we opened our doors. Now, nine months in, we’ve been able to inspire and support groups from all walks of life. It’s been an incredible journey of growth, both for us and the community we serve.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m proud to be the co-founder of Vikara Center, a retreat space that blends yoga, somatic healing, and holistic wellness. What sets us apart is our deep commitment to creating a safe, supportive environment where people can embark on transformative journeys of healing and self-discovery. My path here has been anything but easy. Overcoming personal trauma has been a major part of my journey. I’ve learned that healing isn’t linear, and the most profound growth often comes from the darkest times. What I want people to know about Vikara Center is that it’s a place where you can truly reconnect with yourself and awaken to your highest potential. Our mission is to guide individuals through their unique journeys, offering tools for healing, empowerment, and spiritual growth. For more information, please visit www.vikaracenter.com.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting, I’d plan an amazing week-long itinerary that showcases San Diego’s amazing culture, nature, and yoga spots. We’d kick things off with a relaxing stay at the Lafayette Hotel for some rejuvenation. For breathtaking views, we’d head to Sunset Cliffs in Ocean Beach and take a stroll along Newport Avenue for the local shops and laid-back beach vibe.
In Encinitas, we’d visit Swami’s Self-Realization Fellowship for a sunrise meditation. Breakfast would follow at Cafe Madeleine in North Park, known for its cozy French charm. Afterward, we’d explore Verbatim Books before taking a yoga class at South Park Yoga or Sojourn Healing Collective. To wrap up the day, we’d enjoy rooftop dining at Kettner Exchange in Little Italy.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My journey to Vikara Center wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible support and guidance of so many. First and foremost, my partner Brian and older siblings, who have been a constant source of love and encouragement. I also want to express deep gratitude to Hala Khouri, an inspiring somatic counselor, trauma specialist, social justice activist, yoga teacher, author, and co-founder of Off the Mat and Collective Resilience Yoga. Her wisdom, support and mentorship have profoundly influenced my path. Additionally, I owe so much to Ally Hamilton, a yoga teacher, author, and owner of Yogis Anonymous, whose friendship and leadership have been invaluable. Lastly, a huge thank you to Jai, the owner of the KOA campground, whose involvement was instrumental in helping us build Vikara Center.
