We had the good fortune of connecting with Marifer Gomez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marifer, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
The most important lesson my business has taught me is keep going even when you feel like you’re failing. It’s incredibly hard to do but I have a support system that helps me when I’m down. I’ve also learned that you only really fail when you stop trying.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve always loved art and fashion design but I wasn’t always sure how I was going to make it a career for myself. It wasn’t until the pandemic that I made a star top for a friend that I decided to keep making more.
I think what sets my art apart is that I want everything I make to be functional and I want it to be something that can passed down from generation to generation. That’s what I love about crochet, it’s a bunch of small knots working together to make a very strong piece.
Im most proud of people remembering my brand and telling me they’ve talked about what I made to their friends. There’s so many brands out there so the fact that someone remembers mine feels amazing and like I’ve made an impression.
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to write everything down and keep working on your craft even when you feel like giving up.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I had a friend visiting the city for the week I would take them to the broad museum then to eat at Grand Central Market for lunch and Sugarfish for dinner. I would also take them to my favorite beaches and hiking spots in Laguna Beach and end the week in Long Beach to visit all the local bars especially Baby Gees
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shoutout my mom, grandma, husband, and my whole family. My grandma taught me to crochet at 12 and my mom and husband have always believed and supported me.
I would also like to thank my friends for being my first customers and models.
