We had the good fortune of connecting with Chelsea Harrison and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chelsea, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
Unlike many other ambitious business owners, I do NOT like taking risks. For that reason, when refreshing a room, I focus on maximizing the aesthetics and functionality, with minimal renovations. This allows me to stretch the budget further, with minimal stress and relatively short project timelines.

Of course, there are times when the layout needs to be altered or other major upgrades are needed. I’m willing and able to do those as well but in order to mitigate risk, I’ve implemented an extremely realistic, 4k rendering software to help provide clarity and communication with the client. In addition, I manage my tradesmen extremely closely, and often times ask many questions, while planning 3-4 steps ahead, since each step is so heavily dependant on the previous one. Because I am so risk averse, I tend to work extra hard on the small details, in order to accurately set expectations and stretch the budget as far as it can go.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I think what differentiates me from other designers, is that I curate accessible luxury through quality, sustainable, unique home finds. I make sure to give heavy attention to functionality and organizational systems in the home. I think a lot of people believe that interior design is a very high end service that is out of reach and even ostentatious at times. But, I know MANY people would simply appreciate being able to delegate the entire project of decorating and furnishing their home, to someone who has their best interest at heart, caters to their unique style, and knows how to best save and splurge.

Being a busy mom myself, I know the importance of practicality, tranquility, and functionality in my home. The entire goal of my designs, is to bring peace, comfort, and magazine ready style so that my clients can start enjoying their space now, instead of struggling for months or even years to have a home that feels “put together.”

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
As an LA local, I love exploring restaurants, and small businesses! I would make sure to bring my friends to:

1) The Cicada Club. Art Deco era at its finest, an amazing vintage-inspired venue with live big band jazz events, in Downtown LA. Great for all ages with a huge dance floor for a unique, classy night out.
2) Salsa night at Ivy Station. Free outdoor salsa lessons, great for all ages. Such a fun, light-hearted event for date night or a perfect night out with girlfriends. Plus, tons of great restaurants within walking distance.
3) Perch. Rooftop restaurant that serves brunch and dinner, with spectacular 360* views of downtown and absolutely phenomenal service.
4) Rhythm Room. Downtown LA bar with speakeasy vibes, live band music playing top hits, pool tables, great drinks and solid bar food. Reminiscent of my New York City days.
5) Manchego. A tapas styled, very intimate restaurant in Santa Monica. Tiny portions, but I leave absolutely stuffed every time. Every bite is mindblowing. Doesn’t hurt that it’s walking distance from the beach as well!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I so appreciate all the support I’ve received from my community. In the beginning, one friend encouraged me to convert my talent/passion project to a full on side business. Without her encouragement, I may never have even started Chelsea Harrison Designs. Early on, many friends and family members entrusted me to reorganize and decorate their homes, which allowed me to gain some experience and refine my process. My husband along the way, has endured me taking considerable time to learn how to edit Instagram reels, coordinate in-person install days, and many decor-related shopping trips for clients. Even the community of interior designers and other content creators I’ve found through social media has been so helpful- allowing me to DM many questions about how to collab with brands, to how to market my services, and even passing along leads to me! It truly takes a village for anyone to have success, and I’m immensely thankful for the village I’ve been given.
